The role

Sustainable Views, part of FT Specialist, is the leading publication for corporate sustainability experts covering policy and regulation related to environmental and social governance globally.

We are looking for a Data Journalist to join the team on a 12 month fixed term contract. This role offers the chance to join a growing editorial team and bring new value to readers in one of the most exciting beats in business journalism.

The successful applicant will be asked to identify unique stories sourced from publicly available and proprietary datasets, and tell these stories in an engaging way. You will cover stories such as changes to regulation related to climate change, environmental protection and restoration, sustainable finance and social issues for a business audience. Your writing should clearly communicate the importance of the story to less data-adept readers, and your use of visualisation should help to reinforce this.

You will engage with the wider editorial team, helping to drive adoption of industry-leading data storytelling techniques. In addition to working with publicly available datasets, you will also have access to internal datasets including our industry-leading repository of sustainable finance legislation.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the editor and journalists to identify emerging news trends in data, and datasets that shed further light on themes being identified by the wider editorial team
  • Write unique stories based on trends identified in datasets
  • Support the wider editorial team and be a champion for high-quality data and visual storytelling

Required skills and experience

  • Experience or training in data analysis and/or data journalism
  • Cleaning, functions & scraping from publicly available sources and ability to find the story beneath statistics using Excel and R coding; also experience of HTML & GitHub.
  • Ability to relate data and statistics to the public interest, and communicate clearly to readers with varying levels of data literacy.
  • Strong, accurate writing skills.
