The Role

The Financial Times is seeking an experienced Editorial Growth and Engagement Journalist to join our New York newsroom. The Editorial Growth and Engagement team covers SEO, social media, newsletters, community journalism and audience diversity initiatives. The team’s goal is to increase the reach and impact of our journalism.

This role will have a special focus on social media and search engine optimisation (SEO) in the newsroom. Every day you will plan and execute the FT’s social media coverage of news events around the world and will reach out to editors and reporters to give SEO recommendations.

You will bring sharp news judgment, excellent writing skills and experience curating social media channels. We are also looking for someone who can demonstrate a deep familiarity with SEO and is experienced in content optimisation.

Key responsibilities

  • Produce and post content across all our social media channels (including Instagram, LinkedIn, X, Facebook and Bluesky), finding creative ways to engage our audience around the biggest news of the day.
  • Optimise FT stories for search. Use data to inform real-time and long-term SEO recommendations and our editorial strategy on the FT’s social channels.
  • Provide regular insights on content performance and user behaviour to editors.
  • Develop ideas for optimising and innovating our social publishing, including the opportunity to experiment with new tools, platforms and formats.
  • Collaborate with editors and reporters to align coverage with audience needs.
  • Keep on top of industry trends, platform developments, and emerging audience strategies.

What we are looking for

  • Strong news judgment and a sharp eye for headlines. Equally comfortable handling business and financial stories as global news and geopolitics.
  • Experience working in a similar role, with demonstrable knowledge of social media trends and SEO best practices. Confident using Google trends and other SEO tools.
  • Experience managing social media channels in a newsroom or other organisation and comfortable juggling tasks depending on the news agenda. Confident handling breaking news, crunching down 1000-word features into punchy social posts that speak to a global audience, designing carousels for Instagram and producing basic news clips.
  • Comfortable using analytics tools to make editorial decisions.
  • Ability to write clearly and accurately, often at speed, with style.
  • A collaborative approach and eagerness to work across teams.

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Tuesday 10th June 2025.

The use of AI

Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism.  Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.

We expect applicants to the FT newsroom to refrain from using AI in their test submissions, and any written materials should be a genuine reflection of their own knowledge, skills and experiences. We encourage candidates only to employ AI as a tool to help with research and interview readiness for a role.

Candidates should be aware that the use of AI throughout the application process is monitored to ensure a fair and transparent hiring process for all.
