We are committed to removing barriers for everyone, with a focus on addressing those faced by underrepresented groups.

The role
The Financial Times is hiring a new energy correspondent.

Energy is one of the most consequential and dynamic beats at the FT, sitting at the intersection of geopolitics, markets, climate, and corporate strategy.

From the workings of Opec + to Europe’s struggling transition away from fossil fuels, energy is reshaping economies and political alliances and we are looking for a journalist who can chronicle these changes with depth, authority and flair.

You will be responsible for both coverage of the oil and gas markets and coverage of some of the world’s biggest energy producers, working closely with the regional correspondents and the energy team in the US.

Your reporting will also span geopolitics, energy security, infrastructure and policy shifts in major economies, as well as new technologies across all sectors, such as carbon capture, new fuels, small modular reactors or nuclear fusion.

The role includes everything from breaking news and corporate scoops to deep investigative features and international reporting trips. The energy transition is one of the FT’s most important cross-disciplinary themes, and you’ll work closely with colleagues across Markets, Companies, Climate Capital, and Visual/Data journalism.

This is a high-profile, rewarding role at the heart of one of the biggest stories of our time.

Key responsibilities

  • Generate scoops, exclusives and reads for the Companies, Markets and World desks while writing breaking news, original features and contributing to other sections of the FT
  • Cooperate effectively with colleagues in London, Europe, Asia and the North America energy team
  • Produce simple charts, handle data and identify opportunities to collaborate with Visual and Data journalism teams
  • The position requires an understanding of both companies and markets, as well as the geopolitical role that energy - and especially oil and gas - plays. You’ll need to be as comfortable with a government minister as you are a hedge fund manager or company executive
  • Occasional Sunday/Public Holiday shifts are required as part of the Industry team rota

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Thursday 28 August 2025.

The use of AI

Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism.  Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.

We expect applicants to the FT newsroom to refrain from using AI in their test submissions, and any written materials should be a genuine reflection of their own knowledge, skills and experiences. We encourage candidates only to employ AI as a tool to help with research and interview readiness for a role.

Candidates should be aware that the use of AI throughout the application process is monitored to ensure a fair and transparent hiring process for all.
