About the role:

The Web Production Editor (Graphics) plays a vital role in the creation and production of high-quality graphics for FT media platforms. Working within the graphics team, the role ensures that all visual assets meet FT quality standards, adhere to brand guidelines, and are completed on schedule. This position incorporates emerging trends in digital graphics design, such as data visualization, interactive content, and responsive media, to enhance audience engagement and deliver innovative and impactful designs.

 

Responsibilities:

Creation and Sourcing

  • Design and produce static, animated, and interactive graphics, charts and maps for use across FT media platforms, ensuring visuals are compelling, accurate, and aligned with editorial objectives.
  • Source and edit images that enhance storytelling and adhere to copyright standards.

Production Standards and Quality Assurance

  • Maintain and enforce production standards for all graphics and images, ensuring consistency with FT brand and design guidelines.
  • Review and refine visual assets to ensure they meet quality, accuracy, and accessibility standards.

Innovation and Emerging Trends

  • Stay updated on emerging trends in digital graphics design, including interactive storytelling and responsive design, and implement innovative approaches to enhance the user experience.
  • Explore new tools and technologies for efficient production and improved visual storytelling.

Team Support and Leadership

  • Assist the Group Leader in ensuring that the team’s outputs are of the highest standard, meeting deadlines and editorial goals.
  • Mentor and guide colleagues by providing direction, feedback, and encouragement to foster professional growth and collaboration.

Collaboration and Coordination

  • Perform other production functions as instructed by senior team members, the Group Leader, Team Leader, or UK Manager.
  • Take on additional responsibilities during high-pressure news cycles or special projects.

 

Qualifications / Competencies / Skills / Experience:

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, InDesign and XD), Excel, and data visualization tools (e.g. Flourish, Fastcharts or similar platforms).
  • Knowledge of web-based interactive tools (e.g. D3.js), mapping/cartography (QGIS, Mapcreator) and Adobe Premiere is a strong advantage.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards for digital media and best practices for responsive design.

Editorial Judgment

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating sound news sense and the ability to make critical editorial and design decisions.
  • Strong understanding of how visuals can support and enhance storytelling.

Attention to Detail and Quality

  • Meticulous eye for detail and accuracy, with the ability to maintain high standards under tight deadlines.
  • Skilled in reviewing and refining graphics to ensure clarity, consistency, and compliance with brand guidelines.

Adaptability and Innovation

  • Adaptable to new tools, processes, and emerging trends in digital graphics design and media production.
  • Enthusiastic about learning new technologies and exploring creative approaches to visual storytelling.
  • Ability to respond quickly and flexibly to requests from other FT offices
  • Willingness to work on night shift, weekends, or holidays, to meet the  demands of a 24/7 news operation.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within a team and across departments.
  • A proactive team player who values collaboration and fosters a positive work environment.
