(Senior) Platform Engineer – Cloud Foundations (m/f/d)
About the role
You’ll build our cloud foundations and paved roads so product teams can ship safely and fast on STACKIT (primary) and GCP (selected capabilities)—with an architecture that can support a justified multi-cloud future.
Your mission is the control plane: secure-by-default org/project structures, identity federation, guardrails, templates, and automation so the “right way” is the easy way. You’ll deliver stable platform interfaces (modules, policies, golden paths) that Infrastructure and product teams can reliably consume.
This role currently operates during office hours; as the platform matures, you will take increasing ownership of foundation primitives operations, including incident response outside office hours when needed (with runbooks and clear escalation paths).
Your Responsibilities
- Design and evolve the landing zone: org/project/account structure, environments (prod/non-prod), baseline networking primitives, shared services, and tenant onboarding patterns.
- Deliver provider-specific foundations behind stable interfaces: ship STACKIT + GCP implementations while keeping the consumption model consistent (modules, templates, policies).
- Implement workforce identity federation (Okta-first): SSO integrations (OIDC/SAML), group-to-role mapping, least-privilege role design, auditability, and break-glass patterns in partnership with Security.
- Establish policy-as-code guardrails with compliance-friendly defaults (misconfiguration prevention, standards enforcement, evidence readiness).
- Roll out guardrails audit-first where appropriate (audit → enforce) with an explicit exception mechanism (time-bound, approved, expiring).
- Build and maintain Terraform modules and workflows: module composition patterns, state strategy, CI/CD integration, review workflows, lifecycle safety.
- Standardize environment bootstrap using automation (Ansible where appropriate) and repeatable templates.
- Create engineering enablement artifacts: templates, golden paths, reference implementations, documentation, examples, “how we do cloud here”.
- Define paved-road interfaces for runtime (in coordination with Infra): base VM images / baseline hardening expectations, Docker runtime patterns, logging/export requirements, network segmentation patterns.
- Partner with Security and engineering teams to translate requirements into usable platform primitives (not ticket ping-pong).
- Improve developer experience and throughput: reduce friction, shorten lead time, keep governance lightweight but effective.
Your Profile
- Proven experience building cloud platforms / landing zones (or equivalent platform foundations).
- Deep Terraform experience in production (modules, composition patterns, state management, CI/CD workflows).
- Strong understanding of identity federation and access control patterns (OIDC/SAML, least privilege, role design, auditability); experience with workforce IdP integrations is a strong plus.
- Experience implementing policy-as-code guardrails (conceptually and practically).
- Experience with automation for bootstrap/configuration (Ansible or comparable).
- Docker in production: strong understanding of containerized runtime patterns on VMs (build/run basics, security and operational considerations).
- Strong communication and enablement mindset: you ship platforms that other engineers actually want to use.
Nice to Have
- Experience designing multi-cloud foundations or portability patterns.
- Familiarity with compliance-friendly platform design (evidence trails, change controls) without slowing delivery.
- Experience with Dagger.io (plus, not required).
