Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
We believe in the power of unique perspectives and want all voices in our organisation to be heard, respected and valued. A supportive workplace is one where employees feel they can be themselves and operate to their full potential. We are committed to removing barriers for everyone, with a focus on addressing those faced by underrepresented groups.
The role
We are seeking an energetic and experienced reporter to cover the $100tn US asset management industry, a beat that is at the heart of the FT’s US coverage.
This is a dynamic reporting role that includes many of the world’s biggest and best known money managers including Vanguard, Fidelity, Pimco and Capital Group, as well as the asset management arms of the big Wall Street banks. The incoming Trump administration is likely to radically change the rules of the road for this tightly regulated industry, creating opportunities for both innovation and misbehaviour.
You will be able to illuminate a rapidly changing investing landscape that has seen money management transition from simple stock and bond picking to one that relies on technology to provide investors with everything from index trackers to a wide range of specialised products and individual accounts.
Key qualities:
- The ability to write clearly on everything from quick news stories to in-depth analysis
- The determination to dig into often opaque privately-run companies that like to keep their bad news under wraps
- The charm to amass and draw information from a wide variety of contacts
- An eye for spotting interesting people to profile and the knack for turning interviews into news
- Experience writing about investment and the financial sector is desirable but not essential
- Facility with using data to find and illustrate stories is desirable
The reporter is part of the team led by James Fontanella-Khan, the US financial editor. They will be expected to participate in the New York bureau weekend rota and to jump in and help cover other financial news as relevant.
Please submit your application by the end of the day, Tuesday 11th February 2025.
Salary range
A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $90,000 to $120,000. To ensure pay fairness, the successful candidate will be offered a salary within the estimated salary range based on a number of considerations including but not limited to: skill set; experience and training; certifications; and other business and organisational needs. This position is represented by the News Guild.
The use of AI
Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism. Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.
We expect applicants to the FT newsroom to refrain from using AI in their test submissions, and any written materials should be a genuine reflection of their own knowledge, skills and experiences. We encourage candidates only to employ AI as a tool to help with research and interview readiness for a role.
Candidates should be aware that the use of AI throughout the application process is monitored to ensure a fair and transparent hiring process for all.
