The Role Overview

This Software Engineering role sits at the heart of improving software delivery practices at the FT. The focus is on enabling technology teams to build, test, package, and deploy systems efficiently, reliably, and securely. By analysing existing workflows, identifying pain points, and building solutions, the role empowers engineers to deliver changes to production frequently and with confidence.

What you’ll bring to the role

  • Strong programming and software engineering capability.
  • Proven understanding of CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and quality-focused development.
  • Experience with automated testing and test-driven development.
  • Awareness of security, compliance, and operational resilience.
  • Ability to take ownership of outcomes and support colleagues effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and support high-quality software and tooling, from concept through to production.
  • Partner with teams across the FT to help them adopt best practices in source control, CI/CD, artefact management, and infrastructure as code.
  • Operate and monitor systems in production, treating reliability as a first-class concern.
  • Share knowledge and foster engineering excellence across teams.
  • Balance innovation with governance, risk, and security considerations.

Required Experience

We are looking for someone who can bring a solid mix of technical skills, delivery experience, and a collaborative mindset. Ideally, you will have:

  • Strong programming and engineering skills in one or more languages (e.g. Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, Java, Bash or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with source control (e.g. Git or GitHub) and effective branching/merging practices.
  • Proven experience building and operating CI/CD pipelines using tools such as CircleCI or GitHub Actions
  • Understanding of artefact, package and dependency management (e.g. DockerHub, Cloudsmith, JFrog or NPM).
  • Infrastructure as Code and automation (e.g. CloudFormation, Terraform, CDK, or Serverless Framework) to manage and provision cloud resources.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS or similar), with experience deploying and operating applications in production.
  • Experience with containers and/or serverless architectures (Docker, ECS, Lambda or Kubernetes desirable).
  • Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools (e.g. Grafana, Prometheus or Splunk)
  • A test-driven mindset, with experience in automated testing at multiple levels (unit, integration, pipeline).
  • An awareness of security, cost, risk, and governance when building delivery pipelines and developer tooling.
  • Demonstrable experience supporting production systems, including monitoring, observability, and incident response.
