(Senior) Infrastructure Engineer – Linux & Networking (m/f/d)

Munich

About the role

You’ll build and operate the Linux + networking backbone that keeps our services reliable and secure across cloud VMs and on-prem VMs. This role is hands-on and pragmatic: keep it running, make it better—while reducing manual toil through automation.

Your mission is the data plane and hybrid boundary: Linux operations, routing, DNS, segmentation, firewalls, and ZTNA/VPN connectivity. You’ll implement and operate the patterns defined by Platform Engineering, and you’ll work closely with Security to keep privileged access and auditability sane.

This role currently operates during office hours; as the platform matures, you will take increasing ownership of infrastructure backbone operations, including incident response outside office hours when needed (with runbooks and clear escalation paths).

Your Responsibilities

  • Own and operate Linux infrastructure across cloud and on-prem VMs (primarily Ubuntu): provisioning, patching, baselining, access patterns, and lifecycle management.
  • Operate container runtime on VMs: run and troubleshoot Docker-based workloads (system-level runtime reliability, disk/CPU/memory pressure, logging, networking).
  • Design, implement, and troubleshoot connectivity across environments: routing, segmentation, DNS, VPN/ZTNA patterns, and hybrid traffic flows.
  • Configure and maintain firewalling across cloud and on-prem setups, applying standard patterns from Platform and Security.
  • Operate the hybrid access boundary: ZTNA/VPN implementation/operations, segmentation, log export, and incident workflows in coordination with IT and Security.
  • Build operational observability for Linux and networking:
    • Dashboards and alerting (Grafana or equivalent)
    • Log collection practices for operational troubleshooting
    • Ensure security-relevant logs from boundary systems (VPN/ZTNA, firewalls, DNS) are exported to a central security logging/SIEM solution.
  • Ensure operational excellence: runbooks, incident response, post-incident follow-ups, and iterative reliability improvements.
  • Automate repetitive work and standardize environments using Terraform and scripting (bash or equivalent); contribute improvements to shared modules/templates where appropriate.
  • Validate resilience: backup/restore validation and periodic restore tests for infra-managed systems; maintain living documentation (topology, routes, trust boundaries).

Your Profile

  • Strong experience operating Linux systems (e.g., Ubuntu) in production.
  • Strong fundamentals in networking (TCP/IP, DNS, routing, VPN/ ZTNA concepts, firewalling, segmentation).
  • Docker in production: comfortable operating and troubleshooting Docker-based workloads on VMs.
  • Solid automation skills: Terraform and bash (or similar scripting); comfortable working with PR-based workflows.
  • Practical experience building/operating monitoring and logs (Grafana/Loki or equivalent), including alerting fundamentals.
  • Production troubleshooting skills: you can triage, isolate, and fix issues methodically.
  • Clear written communication (runbooks, post-incident notes, technical docs).

Nice to have:

  • Experience with HashiCorp Nomad (optional).
  • Some exposure to Kubernetes (minor role).
  • Experience working across cloud + on-prem or in hybrid transitions.
  • Terraform+bash

Benefits and Perks

  • A shaping role in an emerging dual use company
  • Opportunity to work with a highly innovative, international, and dynamic team
  • Room for professional growth and development
