About the role:

The User-Generated Content (UGC) Moderator plays a critical role in protecting the integrity, quality, and reputation of FT.com by ensuring that all reader contributions and community interactions align with Financial Times standards and community guidelines.

This role supports a respectful, intelligent, and high-quality discussion environment across FT platforms while collaborating closely with editorial and community teams globally.

Key Responsibilities:

Content Moderation & Quality Control

  • Review and moderate user-generated content (comments and discussions) to ensure compliance with FT community guidelines and editorial standards

  • Apply sound editorial judgment when assessing sensitive, controversial, or high-risk content

  • Escalate complex or policy-sensitive cases to the Community Manager when appropriate

Platform & Community Support

  • Monitor the moderation system to ensure optimal performance and efficiency

  • Support subscribers with access to and use of the commenting platform

  • Identify recurring user issues and recommend improvements to processes or tools

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise closely with the Community Manager on moderation matters and community trends

  • Moderate posts across FT social media channels as requested

  • Respond to requests from the Community Manager and Social Media Desk Editors across FT’s global editorial offices

Reporting & Insights

  • Produce regular moderation reports, including key statistics and trends

  • Highlight emerging risks, recurring issues, and engagement patterns

  • Contribute insights to support continuous improvement of community engagement strategies

Team Contribution

  • Contribute positively to team culture and collaborative working relationships

  • Support ad hoc editorial tasks as directed by the Team Leader/Manager

  • Stay current with evolving platform tools, moderation technologies, and digital best practices

Qualifications:

Experience & Knowledge

  • Experience in content moderation, digital publishing, journalism, community management, or a related field preferred

  • Strong understanding of the news cycle and global current affairs

  • Familiarity with online publishing tools, moderation systems, and digital platforms

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent written and spoken English

  • Strong editorial judgment and decision-making ability

  • High attention to detail with the ability to identify risks quickly

  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure while maintaining accuracy and consistency

  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage high volumes of content

  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision

  • Collaborative team player with strong communication skills

  • Resilient and comfortable working in a fast-paced newsroom environment

Working Requirements

  • Willingness to work on a rotating shift schedule, including nights, weekends, and public holidays
