The role

The Financial Times is hiring a Social Media Editor to join our London-based newsroom team on a part-time basis, working three days a week, initially on a 6 month fixed term contract. 

We are seeking a journalist who is passionate about social media and getting ahead of the day’s big stories. It’s essential to have a deep familiarity with best practices in the social media space, demonstrate an eagerness to plug into newsroom conversations and be experienced in content promotion planning. This role will help us increase our global social media reach, innovate across our social channels and deepen engagement with our audiences.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter who will want to work with all editorial teams - globally - to produce creative and dynamic content. They will engage with digital journalism trends across the industry and help bring experimentation and innovation to editorial’s social content output.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute the FT’s social media coverage of news events around the world. This will involve working in concert with the Audience Engagement and wider editorial teams
  • Identify the social media team’s news priorities and carry out our daily social media coverage in consultation with the rest of the team and news editors in London.
  • Produce and post social content across all our social channels.  
  • Use analytics to inform decisions and creative ways to present FT journalism and regularly report back on the performance of our social channels.
  • Design Instagram stories, posts and social cards for other platforms using Adobe templates.
  • Produce newsclips for Instagram and TikTok.
  • Develop ideas for optimising and innovating our social publishing, with a view both on content and strategy. You may lead experiments with new tools, platforms or formats.
  • Train colleagues in their use of social media, analytics and social listening tools.
  • Sunday shifts are required as part of the team rota

 

Who we are looking for:

  • Strong news judgement, comfortable handling breaking news
  • Experience with business and financial news is desirable, but not essential
  • Newsroom experience
  • Deep familiarity with the established social networks and an eye on emerging platforms
  • Ability to write clearly and accurately, often at speed, with style. Needs to be able to synthesise stories into social media posts that speak to a global audience.  
  • Can produce simple eye catching graphics and short videos for social — confident at editing photos and video. Some experience with the Adobe suite would be a plus.
  • A track record of social media innovation and proactive at finding creative ways to engage our audience around the biggest news of the day
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail

This social media editor will be expected to work regular Sunday shifts, as part of the desk rota.
