Staff Product Designer (f/m/d)
The position
At Hive, we're building the leading operations platform for independent commerce. We’re looking for a Staff Product Designer to join us in shaping the future of merchant experiences.
As a Staff Product Designer, you’ll work closely with a cross-functional team and play a key part in setting strategy and direction for a merchant-facing group. You’ll also stay close to the work by embedding directly in one squad, contributing hands-on to a complex and high-visibility product area while helping ensure design quality and alignment across the group.
This is a role for a designer who enjoys moving between big-picture strategy and detailed product design — making the complex feel simple, and creating experiences that help independent merchants grow their businesses with ease.
What you’ll do:
- Tackle highly complex, large-scale design challenges, simplifying interconnected experiences across a key product area.
- Drive design direction end-to-end for strategic initiatives — from early concepts to polished, scalable solutions that set the standard for others.
- Partner closely with Product and Engineering leadership to shape group-level vision and strategy, while contributing hands-on within a squad.
- Apply systems thinking to create coherent, scalable experiences across teams, evolving our design system and patterns where needed.
- Leverage research and insights (qualitative and quantitative) to shape product direction, influence roadmaps, and uncover opportunities beyond your immediate scope.
- Identify and lead strategic opportunities to improve the product, balancing quick learning with long-term impact.
- Raise the bar for design quality and consistency, ensuring a cohesive experience across the product ecosystem.
- Act as a design leader within the group — modelling strong craft, mentoring other designers, and fostering an inclusive, collaborative design culture.
Profile:
- You’ve operated at a Staff or equivalent level — leading complex initiatives, shaping direction across multiple teams, and driving significant product impact. You may have been a Staff Designer, a Lead Designer, or a hands-on Design Manager looking to return to craft while remaining deeply strategic.
- Your portfolio showcases systems thinking and breadth — strong product, interaction, and visual design — demonstrating both craft excellence and impact at scale.
- You’re experienced in leading design work end-to-end, from shaping early concepts to iterating polished, scalable solutions.
- You have a track record of influencing product strategy and vision in close partnership with Product and Engineering leadership.
- You’ve provided direct mentorship to other designers, helping elevate mid–senior peers in their craft and approach.
- You balance intuition with research, using qualitative and quantitative insights to inform decisions and push work forward.
- You’re deeply fluent in Figma and design systems, knowing when to evolve or introduce new patterns to scale quality across products.
- You have solid prototyping skills and it’s a routine part of your workflow, using it to explore, communicate, and refine ideas with speed and clarity.
Bonus points
- You’re actively experimenting with AI tools — whether for generative ideation, prototyping or execution and exploring how they can extend your design practice.
- You bring other emerging practices, tools, or perspectives that help push the craft and the team forward.
