Senior Cloud Engineer

Rotterdam (HQ)

About Gradyent

A quarter of all energy in the world is consumed to heat buildings. District heating is the most significant opportunity for cities to decarbonise. Gradyent is on a mission to help cities to decarbonise faster by digitising district heating with our digital twin. Backed by a group of top investors, we are scaling the platform globally.

We currently have a team of 60+ people and offices in Rotterdam (the Netherlands), Germany and Hungary. Our team combines programmers and energy specialists, data scientists and top-tier consulting alums. We are expanding quickly and looking for a Product Lead in the Netherlands to help us scale our SaaS platform across Europe.

What we do

We offer a SaaS solution to create digital twins of heating networks. These digital twins, powered by AI and analytics, optimise (district) heating networks from heat sources to customers. As a result, we are transforming networks by reducing CO2 emissions and optimising operations in terms of temperatures, pressures, and other metrics. These solutions minimise energy usage, CO2 emissions and operating costs while maintaining the proper end-user service levels.

What you'll do

As our Senior Cloud Engineer, you will play a key role in building and maintaining the infrastructure that powers our multi-tenant SaaS platform. You'll be responsible for the infrastructure supporting our application layer, which hosts web applications (Java, Node.js, React) and proxies within our Kubernetes environment. You will be at the center of our ongoing migration to a Kubernetes-based platform on AWS. Working alongside the rest of the Cloud team, you'll design and implement efficient, cost-effective, and high-performance infrastructure with robust monitoring and security measures.

Your work will directly enable development teams to continuously deploy new features—from enhancing our interactive Digital Twins of district heating networks to handling high-volume sensor data integrations from client systems. You'll operate in a modern tech stack with minimal legacy constraints, within an open and agile engineering culture where the best technical ideas win.

This is a self-directed role where you'll tackle complex infrastructure challenges with autonomy. We're looking for someone who can take high-level requirements and independently determine the technical implementation details.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure on AWS, with a focus on Kubernetes orchestration using tools like Karpenter
  • Lead the ongoing migration to our Kubernetes-based multi-tenant platform and ensure its continued evolution
  • Implement and manage infrastructure as code using Terraform
  • Develop and maintain efficient CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation
  • Establish and improve monitoring, observability, and alerting systems (CloudWatch, Grafana, Prometheus)
  • Design and implement disaster recovery solutions for mission-critical systems
  • Manage database infrastructure in AWS RDS (primarily PostgreSQL)
  • Optimize cloud costs while maintaining performance and reliability
  • Ensure security best practices are implemented across all infrastructure
  • Collaborate with development teams to support their deployment needs and resolve infrastructure-related issues

What will make you successful in this role?

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in Cloud/DevOps engineering with proven ability to design and implement infrastructure solutions
  • Strong expertise in Kubernetes for container orchestration (experience with Karpenter is a plus)
  • Deep experience with AWS cloud services (or strong preference for AWS with extensive experience in other cloud platforms)
  • Proficiency in Terraform for infrastructure as code
  • Solid experience with Linux operating systems and shell scripting
  • Expertise in Docker and container-based architectures
  • Strong understanding of Git workflows (GitHub/GitLab)
  • Experience managing databases in AWS RDS (PostgreSQL preferred, but general RDS knowledge is valuable)
  • Knowledge of monitoring and observability tools (CloudWatch, Grafana, Prometheus)
  • Understanding of networking concepts and experience with complex network setups
  • Familiarity with security best practices and secure infrastructure design
  • Experience deploying and managing Java and Node.js applications in production

Nice to Have

  • Experience with ArgoCD or similar GitOps tools
  • Background working on SaaS platforms serving multiple tenants
  • Experience with high-volume data processing and integration systems
