The Mission:
We are seeking an experienced Principal Engineer to join Scalapay's Merchant Solutions division. In this role, you will serve as the technical counterpart to our Product Lead (Emiliano), overseeing the technical implementation, architecture, and support of our merchant-facing payment solutions. You'll drive technical excellence and innovation while ensuring our merchant solutions are robust, scalable, and deliver exceptional integration experiences, with a particular focus on maintaining and improving our integrations with key distribution partners.
This is a balanced leadership position that extends beyond coding. You'll divide your time between hands-on development, solution design and architecture work, and customer-facing activities including merchant interactions, technical pre-sales, and partner collaboration. The ideal candidate will thrive in this multifaceted role that bridges technical expertise with business impact
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership across our merchant facing payment products (Pay in 3, Pay in 4, Pay Now, Instore, Pay by Link)
- Lead the maintenance and improvement of our critical integrations with key distribution partners such as Stripe and Adyen
- Architect and lead development of our merchant-facing APIs, SDKs, and integration points
- Oversee technical aspects of our developer documentation (https://developers.scalapay.com/ ), Admin Tool, and Partner Portal
- Design and implement partner integrations, plugin architecture, and payment gateway connections
- Lead technical pre-sales engineering efforts to support merchant adoption
- Drive technical implementation and architecture for new merchant products and features
- Establish technical standards and best practices for merchant integrations
- Collaborate closely with Product to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Provide technical mentorship across the Merchant Services, Solution/Operations, and delivery teams building our our famous BNPL instalment products.
Required Skills & Experience
- 8+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated technical depth
- Strong expertise in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web development
- Experience designing, building, and maintaining production-grade APIs and integration systems
- Deep knowledge of payment processing technical architecture and e-commerce platforms
- Experience leading technical integration projects with external partners and merchants
- Strong architectural thinking with focus on scalability, performance, and security
- Technical communication skills that bridge engineering, product, and merchant audiences
- Experience creating developer-focused documentation and integration resources
- Excellent communication skills
- We operate across many countries so having excellent communication skills and especially English required
- Experience in leading technical pre sales conversations with Enterprise level merchants
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with e-commerce platform integrations (Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce)
- Background in fintech or payments engineering
- Experience with microservices architecture and distributed systems
- Knowledge of technical security requirements for payment applications
- Experience with webhook systems and asynchronous processing
- Experience mentoring engineers and driving technical excellence
