
Software Engineer (f/m/d) - Kernel development (Storage, RDMA)

The data centers behind the IONOS Cloud IaaS consist of hypervisor machines hosting the customer VMs and the storage machines providing the persistent storage. The machines are interconnected via a low latency rdma network. The software side of our storage stack is based on the upstream Linux Kernel drivers, yet to be open-sourced in-house solutions and the provisioning/cloud orchestration software. The Cloud Storage Development Kernel Team is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, troubleshooting, as well as evaluating and optimizing the performance, reliability, and efficiency of this stack.

Tasks
- Add new features, improve efficiency, stability and performance of the software components of our storage stack.
- Get involved in new kernel driver development from conceptual design to implementation and to the deployment strategy.
- Work on preparation of newly developed components for open sourcing and inclusion into mainline.
- Contribute to the upstream kernel drivers (RNBD/RTRS, block layer, RDMA, etc); take part in the corresponding mailing-list discussions.
- Code, document, and release software following the latest industry-proven development processes.
Qualifications
- 4+ years of relevant professional experience in Kernel/OS development.
- Strong knowledge of the Linux operating system, kernel internals, and corresponding development environments.
- Excellent proficiency in C programming and debugging; Knowledge and experience in Python and Bash.
- Experience in the development of the Linux kernel and/or its modules.
- Practical experience in one or more of the following areas: kernel block layer, distributed block devices, RAID based replication, RDMA programming.
- Demonstrates strong ability for independent learning and problem-solving while thriving in team environments by effectively collaborating and contributing to shared objectives.
Nice to have
- Experience contributing to the upstream Linux kernel.
- Experience in designing and implementing algorithms to enhance performance, efficiency, and reliability.
- Knowledge and experience in Go.
