The role
The Financial Times is looking for a strong news editor to join our Asia team, contributing across the file, but with a particular responsibility for technology. The technology sector increasingly dominates the global economy, and along with Silicon Valley, East Asia is one of its poles: from Chinese internet giants such as ByteDance and their efforts in AI, to dominant semiconductor producers such as TSMC and Samsung, and the whole tech manufacturing supply chain that feeds Apple and other electronics producers.
We have excellent reporting on these stories and plans to make it even better. Now we want to add some focused editing muscle, with the judgement to understand what is newsworthy in these complicated topics, the capability to commission sophisticated pieces, and a deft touch in improving copy to make technical subjects comprehensible to our readers around the world.
While part of the Hong Kong desk, the editor will work in close partnership with the technology editor and their team in London to deliver our coverage.
Increasingly, we seek to hire and promote local reporters, which strengthens our local contacts and understanding but also requires our editors to support correspondents who are writing in their second language. Helping those reporters to develop their skills, and to understand what makes a story for international readers, is an important part of the role.
The FT’s Hong Kong newsdesk is a small, close-knit team that has experienced an increasing workload from the Trump-driven global news agenda and the use of different media on our homepage. Willingness and ability to chip in across the range of desk tasks would be highly appreciated. For the right candidate, there may be opportunities to grow and take on more senior roles in the team.
Your skills
Strong news judgement is essential – this is a complex part of the world – as so is good copy editing. Beyond that we would prize the vision to spot great angles and come up with imaginative commissions. Our reporters often have good information and ideas; we want you to be a sounding board and channel their inspiration into a form that works.
The ability to inspire confidence in reporters is important, striking the right balance between cracking the whip and helping them to bring their own ideas to fruition. Experience of reporting, of editing and of wider news production tasks would all be helpful.
The successful candidate for this role is likely to have significant experience as a journalist, most likely as a reporter or editor for a top tier global media outlet. We are unlikely to consider applications from junior candidates unless they are especially convincing in terms of their vision for technology coverage and their technical editing skills.
Native-level English is essential. Experience of business and financial coverage would be extremely helpful - the FT primarily approaches technology through that lens, and not its social or consumer impact. Hong Kong is the FT’s editorial hub for Asia and you will be expected to work in our office here.
Please submit your application by the end of the day, Sunday June 21 2026.
The use of AI
Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism. Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not by default use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.
We expect applicants to the FT newsroom to refrain from using AI in their test submissions, and any written materials should be a genuine reflection of their own knowledge, skills and experiences. We encourage candidates only to employ AI as a tool to help with research and interview readiness for a role.
Candidates should be aware that the use of AI throughout the application process is monitored to ensure a fair and transparent hiring process for all.
Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
We believe in the power of unique perspectives and want all voices in our organisation to be heard, respected and valued. A supportive workplace is one where employees feel they can be themselves and operate to their full potential. We are committed to removing barriers for everyone, with a focus on addressing those faced by underrepresented groups.
What’s in it for you? Our benefits
Our benefits vary by location but we are committed to providing best-in-class perks across all our offices. These include generous annual leave, medical cover, inclusive parental leave packages, subsidised gym memberships and opportunities to give back to the community. Full details of our benefits are available here.
FT Newsroom staff are expected to work onsite a minimum of three days per week, subject to role requirements and regular review. While flexible working requests will be considered, not all patterns are suitable for Editorial roles.
Accessibility
We are a disability confident employer and Valuable 500 signatory.
Please let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments/personalisation as part of the application process or to enable you to attend an interview. If you would like to discuss your requirements or have any questions, email talent@ft.com and a member of our team will be happy to help.
