Principal Earthing Design Engineer
BakerHicks is seeking an experienced Principal Earthing Design Engineer to play a key role in the delivery of high-quality earthing solutions across a diverse portfolio of power infrastructure projects. Working within the HV discipline, you will be responsible for the technical delivery, review, and quality assurance of earthing studies, calculations, reports, drawings, and site survey outputs for projects ranging from 11kV to 400kV.

Reporting to the Discipline Lead - HV, the Senior Earthing Design Engineer will play a key role in ensuring the quality, consistency, and technical excellence of the team's deliverables across a wide range of power infrastructure projects.
In addition to project delivery responsibilities, you will support the Discipline Lead - HV with resource planning and forecasting activities to ensure appropriate utilisation of the team and successful project execution. You will also work closely with the Power Sector Director during bid and tender activities, contributing technical expertise, programme estimates, and design input to help secure new business opportunities and support the continued growth of the Power sector.
This position offers the opportunity to take a leading role in the development of earthing engineering capability within BakerHicks, while working on a diverse portfolio of complex and challenging HV substation projects.
About You
You will have proven experience delivering earthing designs for both new-build and refurbishment HV substation projects ranging from 11kV to 400kV. As a Principal Engineer, you will be capable of producing, reviewing, and approving a full range of engineering deliverables, including calculations, technical reports, specifications, studies, drawings, and associated design documentation.
Your technical expertise will include the development of earthing layouts, single line diagrams, schematics, CDEGS studies, technical specifications, and other design outputs required to support the successful delivery of complex power infrastructure projects. A strong understanding of earthing system design principles, industry standards, and HV substation design practices is essential.
What You Will Do:
As a Principal Earthing Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality earthing and lightning protection designs for substation and power infrastructure projects. Your duties will include:
- Delivering earthing design requirements, including but not limited to:
- Primary earthing layouts and earthing connections details for substations
- Single Line Diagrams and earthing schematics
- Earth Switches, Surge Arrestors, Disconnectors specification
- Earthing studies & earth return current (Igr) calculation
- Earth Potential Rise (EPR) calculations
- Step and Touch potentials
- Determination of “Hot” and “Cold” site
- CDEGS modelling and studies
- High Frequency earthing designs
- Impressed Voltage Studies
- Lightning Risk Assessments
- Lightning Protection Concept designs
- Calculations & Technical reports
- Writing technical specifications for procurement
What You Will Bring:
- Minimum BEng / BSc in Electrical Engineering, with Power / HV background
- Ideally MEng / MSc in Electrical Engineering, with Power / HV background
- Working toward CEng status is seen as beneficial, however not essential
