About The Role

As a Data Engineer within our Data Engineering team, you will be instrumental in designing, building, and maintaining robust streaming ETL pipelines. Leveraging your expertise in Python, Confluent, and the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), you'll work with event-driven architecture to develop production-quality systems that drive our data solutions.

You will actively collaborate with the team to ensure the reliability and performance of existing data systems, components, and platforms. Working closely with other Tech teams, you'll facilitate the seamless collection and transfer of critical data for our third-party clients.

This is a highly technical, hands-on role where you'll apply your strong software engineering skills to write clean, efficient code and deliver impactful solutions to real business challenges. You will also provide technical support to the team and the broader THG Data organisation, contributing to data solution design and engineering best practices.

Essential Skills

• Strong programming skills, particularly in Python
• Significant experience of working with a RDBMS or NoSQL Database, such as SQL Server, CockroachDB and PostgresSQL
• A proven track record of designing and building efficient, scalable, data pipelines
• Experience in scheduling and maintaining automated workflows, particularly using Airflow
• Ability to code and document in a clean, understandable manner
• Ability to deliver streaming pipelines using Kafka/Confluent platform
• Experience in building streaming pipelines using GCP platform (such as Pub/Sub, BigQuery, GCS and DataFlow jobs)
• Excellent understanding of ETL pipelines and able to build pipelines from scratch
• Strong communication and teamwork skills

Responsibilities

• Autonomously plan, design, and deliver high-quality, production-strength data solutions that are scalable, globally distributed, and highly available.
• Develop systems using event-driven architecture, ensuring performance, resilience, and fault tolerance.
• Write clean, reliable, and maintainable code, continuously striving for simplicity and using the right tool for the job.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build and optimise business-critical data pipelines for both internal and third-party client use.
• Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to align on goals and share progress.
• Participate in code reviews, peer programming, and regular knowledge-sharing to uplift team capabilities and maintain best practices.
• Support project delivery through pragmatic estimation, progress tracking, and technical support for systems and user issues.
• Stay adaptable to new technologies and challenges, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and shared ownership.
