About the Opportunity

The Data Science & Machine Learning Engineering team, a part of the broader StubHub Data organization, is looking for an experienced, senior level machine learning practitioner in the space of recommendation and personalization systems in production and generative AI, to develop and execute the product personalization vision at StubHub.

StubHub is the largest secondary ticketing marketplace in the world, generating massive amounts of consumer data across impressions, clicks, and transactions painting a deep picture of customer behaviors. In addition, the product offers multiple surfaces for state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms to be applied from home page construction, component ordering, learn-to-rank search results, pricing recommendations, to name but a few.

What Will You Do?
Commoditization of LLMs and other generative models has changed what is viable to deploy at scale to build a product that can have ML driven personalization. In addition, StubHub’s data team is heavily invested in building a centralized MLE team that can build and deploy highly retentive innovations across the business. In this innovative space, this role is expected to design a long-term vision and execution strategy for ML&AI personalization on the product. We expect this role to mentor MLEs of all levels from Jr to Staff on technical implementations, helping shape their career path through influence, and resource and recruit for the team appropriately. The role will work closely with the ML Infrastructure team to define the architecture to execute their vision, work closely with business partners to communicate results, and align on product strategy.

You will be joining at a critical time for the Data Science & MLE practice and the company, while the value of this discipline has been established and there’s a high performing team in place, we are far from state-of-the-art in our implementation, understanding, and infrastructure. Key areas of investment from a vision and team planning perspective include establishing new pockets of deep technical expertise across two-tower models, transformers, attention, and diffusion, advocating for, and widening the reach of ML company-wide. Most excitingly, we wish to make StubHub an innovator in the space of fundamental algorithms and foster a strong resume of research. As a senior leader of this team, you will be in charge of shaping and materializing that vision

Location: Hybrid (3 days in office/2 days remote) – New York, NY or Los Angeles, CA 
 
What You'll Do:
  • Technical project scoping and planning
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders across the business, executives, and data team
  • Technical review and architecture oversight
  • Research and application of state-of-the-art techniques
  • Surface infrastructure needs and onboard solutions

What You've Done:

  • 10+ years of relevant machine learning/data science in a fast-paced, high growth environment
  • Strong programming and analytical ability with expertise in SQL, Python, Java/JAX/C++ (TensorFlow, scipy, scikit-learn, PyTorch, statsmodels)
  • Hands on experience of deploying recommendation systems in a consumer product
  • Experience with modern workflow orchestration used in machine learning, e.g.,Metaflow, ZenFlow, Airflow
  • Experience with microservices, ML inference services, model registry, versioning, and performance tracking
  • Experience with GPU frameworks in a production setting

  • Worked at consumer tech company
  • Experience with GenAI/LLM/Agentic workflows in a production setting

The anticipated gross base pay range is below for this role. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, skills, experience, and competencies. Base annual salary is one component of StubHub’s total compensation and competitive benefits package, which includes equity, 401(k), paid time off, paid parental leave, and comprehensive health benefits. 

Salary Range

$300,000 - $350,000 USD
