Social & Community Manager

London, UK; Barcelona, Spain; USA (remote)

Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default

At Proton, we believe that privacy is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of democracy. Since our inception in 2014, founded by a team of scientists from CERN, we have dedicated ourselves to providing free and open-source technology to millions worldwide, ensuring access to privacy, security and freedom online.

Our journey began with Proton Mail, the largest secure email service globally, and has since expanded to include Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass. These tools empower individuals and organisations to take control of their personal data, break away from Big Tech’s invasive practices and defeat censorship. Our work impacts hundreds of millions of lives, from activists on the front lines defending freedom to leaders in governments protecting sensitive information. In some cases, Proton’s services have even been instrumental in saving lives by enabling secure and private communications in high-risk situations.

Proton today supports over 100 million user accounts with a growing team of over 500 people from over 50 different countries, from the world's top companies and universities. We value intelligence, learning potential and ambition in our hiring process. Adaptability is key as we navigate uncharted territories and redefine how business is conducted online. We believe smaller teams of exceptional talent will always prevail over larger teams with lower talent density. Proton has become profitable and reached scale without relying upon VC funding, largely due to superior talent that allows us to do things faster, more creatively and more efficiently.

We have a global mindset and big ambitions but remain a start-up at heart. We value empowerment and flexibility and keep our structure flat to keep moving fast and avoid unnecessary politics. Tired of blending into the crowd? Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our social media pages to learn more about us: Reddit, X, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn.

Role overview

We're looking for an experienced Social & Community Manager with a knack for writing and who has a good understanding of technology and the internet, enjoys interacting with people and wants to share their knowledge with them. You'll be responsible for driving growth, engagement and excitement across all our social media platforms, communities and other outlets where we can interact with our highly engaged audience.

This role is part of the Proton Brand & Community team, in which you'll contribute to our overall content creation strategy by aiming to keep our community informed, connecting with people worldwide, creating genuine connections and participating in stimulating conversations; all while perfectly embodying our brand’s personality, but adding your own unique touch.

If you feel comfortable taking the initiative and thrive in fast-paced environments, this is a great opportunity to play a pivotal role in a fast-growing company, having a concrete impact on the future of the business as a whole.

What you’ll do

  • Help grow the Proton community: propose, test and implement strategies to grow our community across various social channels, including X, Instagram, Reddit, WhatsApp, Telegram, Matrix and Discord
  • Create value-rich content: generate compelling content that resonates with the community, drives engagement and aims to educate/inspire/entertain existing and new audiences, participating in social brainstorms, contributing to social content direction and assisting with identifying relevant social amplifiers for brand and product campaigns
  • Listen to the Proton community: serve as the bridge between the community and our development team, gathering feedback, monitoring community sentiment and providing insights to guide product improvements and developments
  • Protect Proton’s reputation: efficiently manage and mitigate any community-related issues or crises, protecting Proton’s reputation and community trust
  • Analyse and optimise our efforts: contribute to the team’s weekly, monthly and quarterly reports, improving our social media presence, community engagement and content performance
  • Keep learning: maintain a constant and detailed understanding of platforms' best practices and changes, following inspiring brands and keeping up with the newest trends, innovations and technologies in brand building, social media and community building

What you'll bring

  • 3+ years of experience in community and brand reputation management
  • At least 1 year of experience within tech/SaaS
  • Demonstrated success in managing and growing social media accounts and online communities with a global reach
  • Experience in managing crisis communications and brand reputation
  • Outstanding written communication skills with the ability to represent the Proton brand in conversations and inspire a diverse audience
  • Strategic planning and execution skills, with a knack for identifying opportunities for growth and engagement within the community
  • Solid understanding and passion for the internet, pop culture, social media content, storytelling etc.
  • Independence, self-motivation and proactivity (you don’t require constant input and have meticulous attention to detail)
  • A personal interest in online privacy and security
  • Experience with both B2C and B2B audiences is a plus (fast-paced, start-up environments preferred)
  • Native English language skills is a big plus
