Business Development Manager

THE ROLE

The candidate will work as part of Starlight’s international development team to support the international expansion of our development platform across new jurisdictions and, potentially, new area of business.

This professional will be responsible for the analysis new markets in terms of regulation, market environment, business opportunities and to identify the most suitable local partners and to set-up operations in those new markets. Moreover, they will work closely with the development team of Starlight to understand the technical and market-related requirements of new jurisdiction and translate them into financial models, market strategies and business case proposals.

The candidate will also cooperate with NextEnergy Group investment team, to leverage on synergies related to jurisdictions where the Group has already invested but is currently not developing projects yet.

With reference to the international expansion of the platform this professional will be asked to provide support in the following areas:

  • Business Development: technology studies, preliminary project evaluation, gathering information on the specific applicable regulatory framework, selection of external advisors, support in the negotiation of development services agreements and consultancy contracts
  • International Expansion: analyse in which country it might be appropriate to further expand the Starlight platform for all the technologies currently developed by Starlight (solar and BESS as a core but also wind on-shore and off-shore). Execute the expansion plan identifying a local partner and/or a local team to be hired and set-up the initial development activities integrating then the new local division into the wider platform
  • Project Development: interaction with all parties involved, in particular with the consultants. This activity is closely related to the previous one and implies involvement and support in contractual and corporate aspects
  • New area of business: while assessing the geographies to assess the suitability for the expansion in the current area of development (mainly PV and BESS) the professional will have also the chance to assess the possibility to expand in new area of business (wind, datacenters etc.).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Market Analysis and Opportunity Assessment
    • Conduct in-depth market research on the solar and BESS identifying market trends, growth prospects, relevant regulatory framework changes and business opportunities in different countries
    • Evaluate and monitor the competitiveness of solar and BESS identifying advantages and potential risks, as well as for other technologies and area of business
  • Business Case Development
    • Create detailed business cases for solar and BESS, considering financial, technical, and economic aspects
    • Assess investment costs, cash flows, financial returns, and payback periods for the proposed projects
    • Analyze potential public incentives, financing options, and support mechanisms
  • Partnership Identification and Collaboration Strategies
    • Evaluate collaboration opportunities with other stakeholders in the sector, such as technology providers, renewable energy producers
    • Identify potential strategic partners and establish collaborative relationships for the development and execution solar and BESS projects and/or set-up local development teams
  • Environmental Sustainability and Regulatory Assessment
    • Analyze the environmental and sustainability aspects, assessing environmental impact, carbon emission reduction, and integration with sustainable development goals
    • Monitor and understand relevant regulations, policies, and government regulations, providing insights on compliance and the evolving regulatory framework
  • Strategic Consulting and Decision Support
    • Actively identify and participate to conferences and take part to lobbying activities to further foster PV and BESS in the selected target countries
    • Provide strategic consulting to the management team on expanding operations in the sector, offering key recommendations and decision support based on market analysis and developed business cases.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Time management & prioritization skills - things can get a little hectic, so the ability to effectively manage yourself and your workload is critical
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (in English or/and other European languages) - you must be able to organize your thoughts in a way that others find clear and compelling. You will be expected to together well-written, grammatically correct emails and other communications. When communicating verbally – whether over the phone, on video calls, in person or in meetings – you will need to be articulate, warm and engaging
  • Flexibility - being an effective team player means being flexible in your approach and open to getting involved with new things, even if they are not spelt out in your job description
  • Intellectual Curiosity – Business Development is a broad and nuanced field and we are looking for someone who is truly interested in our profession and has the intellectual curiosity to delve deep into topics and bring fresh ideas to the team
  • IT Literacy - you need to be comfortable with IT systems and working with data (you should have at least intermediate-level excel)
  • Delivery focus – it may sound obvious, but the ability to proactively churn through work at pace and deliver quality outputs really matters
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, business, engineering or a related field (Master's degree preferred)
  • Proven experience in financial modelling (DCF modelling) and analysis, preferably in the renewable energy
  • Strong understanding of energy market dynamics, electricity pricing structures, and grid services
  • Knowledge of RES technologies and their integration with renewable energy systems
  • Excellent analytical skills and proficiency in financial modelling software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to effectively convey financial analysis and recommendations
  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and interact with technical experts
  • Understanding of regulatory frameworks and policies related to PV and BESS
  • Fluent in English and possibly one of the following languages: Italian, Spanish, German and French.
