Market Analyst, Modeling (CAISO / SPP)

New York

About Modo Energy

The energy transition is the biggest infrastructure buildout in human history. Modo Energy is the data platform at the centre of it.

We build the benchmarking, forecasting, and valuation tools that the world's most serious energy investors, developers, and operators depend on to make decisions. If a battery gets financed, built, or traded anywhere in the world, there's a good chance Modo data was in the room.

Founded in 2019, we're 90+ people across London, New York, Sydney, and Madrid; $30M Series B, AI-native, and moving fast.

This is a rare chance to join a category-defining company at the moment it's scaling globally.

Market Analyst, Modeling (CAISO / SPP)

Reports to: US Modeling Lead
Team: Modeling
Regions: Western Interconnection - CAISO / SPP

About the role

Modo's models tell clients where to build assets, how they will operate, and what they are worth. This role builds them.

The work spans capacity expansion, dispatch and price models, all running inside the Modo platform. You will own a piece of it: a market, a model, or a part of the stack, and take it from a question about how the market behaves through to code that runs in production.

What you will do

  • Build models. Write and maintain the dispatch, price and capacity expansion models for the markets you cover.
  • Learn your markets. Know how your ISOs clear energy and ancillary services, and what changed last month.
  • Test your own work. Backtest against market outturn, find where the model is wrong, and fix it.
  • Explain the results. Show colleagues and clients why the model produced the number it produced.
  • Work with other teams:
    • Research - take their read on what is changing in the market and build it into what you model.
    • Engineering - tell them what the modeling stack needs. You are the user of what they build.
    • Revenue - join technical sales and post-sales calls when clients want to understand the method.

What you need

  • Degree in engineering, maths, physics, economics, or a related field
  • 2+ years in power market modeling, analytics, or a quantitative role in energy
  • You write Python that other people can run, and you work in git
  • You can write and debug an optimization problem — unit commitment, dispatch, or similar
  • You know how at least one US power market clears energy and ancillary services
  • You can take a vague question about market behaviour and turn it into something you can model
  • You say when a result looks wrong rather than shipping it

Nice to have

  • Experience with battery storage dispatch or revenue modeling
  • Experience with an optimization library such as Linopy, Pyomo or PuLP
  • Experience with nodal pricing, PTDFs, or transmission-constrained dispatch
  • Experience working with large time series datasets in SQL

Compensation & Equal Opportunity

  • Base salary range: $110,000–$170,000 per year, depending on experience
  • The salary range listed reflects industry benchmarks for this role. Modo Energy's policy is to pay top of personal market - if you're exceptional, we'll make it work
  • Equity
  • 25 days PTO plus 10 paid Holidays annually
  • 100% employer paid medical, dental and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with matching
  • Modo Energy is an equal opportunity employer - employment decisions are made on the basis of qualifications, merit, and business need. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, New York State, or New York City law
