Director, Americas

New York City, NY

About Modo Energy

The energy transition is the biggest infrastructure buildout in human history. Modo Energy is the data platform at the centre of it.

We build the benchmarking, forecasting, and valuation tools that the world's most serious energy investors, developers, and operators depend on to make decisions. If a battery gets financed, built, or traded anywhere in the world, there's a good chance Modo Energy's data was in the room.

Founded in 2019, we're 90+ people across London, New York, Sydney, and Madrid; $30M Series B, AI-native, and moving fast.

This is a rare chance to join a category-defining company at the moment it's scaling globally.

Location: New York. In the office Tuesday–Thursday, with regular customer and industry travel. Relocation support available.

Reports to: CEO

Salary: $300,000-$400,000 per year, paid entirely as base salary. No annual bonus.

Start date: As soon as possible

About the role

We’re hiring a Director, Americas to lead our US research and modeling organization and become a recognized authority for Modo in US power markets.

You will lead a technically strong team, develop its leaders and bring its work closer to customers. You should be comfortable challenging a modeling assumption, handling a difficult people conversation and explaining battery economics to an investment committee.

The research and modeling leaders will report directly to you. You will own regional hiring, performance, research priorities, modeling quality and delivery within agreed budgets and company priorities.

The initial focus is the US. Sales remains with our global revenue team, and the role initially carries no P&L responsibility. There is scope for the remit to expand into professional services over time.

The opportunity

You will have direct access to the CEO, freedom to shape the organization and an established research and modeling team to build on. You will work alongside regional peers across Modo, sharing ideas and expertise while taking responsibility for the US organization.

Our events, Transmission podcast and research platform will help you grow your industry profile and build relationships with the people making decisions across power markets.

Success means stronger regional leaders, work that customers trust and an organization capable of scaling with greater independence.

What you’ll do

  • Build and develop the team. Recruit strong people, develop the research and modeling leaders, and shape the organization as it grows. Set clear expectations, recognize excellent work and address underperformance directly.
  • Own the credibility of our work. Understand how our forecasts and benchmarks are produced. Challenge assumptions, recognize limitations and ensure conclusions stand up to scrutiny from customers and lenders.
  • Turn customer needs into better products. Spend time with the people using our work. Translate their questions into research priorities and product improvements, working closely with technical teams to deliver them.
  • Represent Modo externally. Build relationships across asset owners, developers, utilities, trading businesses, banks and investors. Speak at conferences, host events and contribute to podcasts and industry discussions.
  • Support important customer decisions. Lead technical discussions in sales and renewal conversations. Explain market outlooks, defend our approach and help customers understand the implications for their assets.
  • Lead the organization day to day. Handle difficult conversations with judgement and candor. Make decisions quickly, remove obstacles and keep unnecessary process out of the team’s way.

Expect to spend approximately half your time internally and half with customers and the wider industry. You will help the team build the same habit of regular customer contact.

What you’ll bring

  • Practical US power-market expertise. You understand market fundamentals and how differences in market design affect asset revenues and risk. Broad knowledge is preferred; exceptional ERCOT or PJM expertise can qualify alongside wider understanding.
  • Industry experience. You have worked inside an energy business, close to commercial or operating decisions. Origination, trading, battery development, optimization and asset ownership are relevant backgrounds.
  • Forecasting judgement. You have produced, commissioned or critically evaluated long-term market outlooks. You understand what makes them useful for investment decisions and how to communicate uncertainty.
  • Technical and product understanding. You can follow and challenge a modeling approach, work effectively with technical specialists and help turn their work into products customers use. You are comfortable with frequent releases and fast iteration.
  • Proven people leadership. You have hired, developed and led teams, ideally of ten or more people. We will consider exceptional leaders of smaller teams.
  • Customer credibility and industry presence. You have established relationships and can lead discussions with banks, investors and asset owners. You communicate well on stage and want to build your public profile.
  • Independence and urgency. You deliver with limited support, take initiative and work from first principles. You can demonstrate how you have maintained quality while increasing the pace of delivery.
  • Ambition, honesty and low ego. You challenge ideas constructively, seek feedback and communicate problems early. People trust your judgement and know where they stand with you.

How we lead

We expect leaders to raise standards, hire people who take ownership and make good decisions at speed. They develop their teams, give others visibility and create an environment where people can challenge them openly.

This is a hands-on role requiring hard work and visible leadership. You should bring urgency to delivery and sound judgement to difficult situations. When something goes wrong, you take responsibility, share the bad news quickly and act.

Compensation

Base Salary: $300,000-$400,000 per year depending on experience. No annual bonus. We pay at the top of your personal market, and for exceptional candidates we’ll make it work.

Additional benefits include:

  • Equity
  • 25 days PTO + 10 paid holidays
  • 401K with matching
  • 100% employer paid medical, dental, and vision plan coverage for you + dependents
  • Commuter benefits
  • Relocation Assistance
