The role

The Financial Times Group is seeking a proven editorial leader and people manager as managing editor of Ignites Asia, the Asian asset management industry's leading title.

Ignites Asia provides asset management professionals with the business and policy information they need to succeed across the region's retail, wholesale and institutional markets.

We are recognised for the impact of our original reporting and coverage of asset management, and are now looking for a managing editor to build on that success.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a mark on one of the most dynamic and fast-growing markets in the asset management industry.

The managing editor is the editorial driver of Ignites Asia, overseeing all content production, and a seven-person editorial team.

We seek an experienced news-driven journalist with an ability to nurture and develop our talent.

Strong preference will be given to candidates with a track record of producing engaging and high-quality, independent journalism for a financial services audience. The role is based in Hong Kong and requires office presence (at least 50% of the time).

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the day-to-day publication cycle, from story generation to editing for impact, style and accuracy, and publishing our content

  • Maintain the overall quality and timeliness of the content and meet the publication's high editorial standards

  • Advance ideas for product improvement and using our resources in the best way

  • Manage and coach a team of reporters to produce the content most important to our audience of asset management executives

  • Monitor online statistics and readership to gauge editorial quality.

  • Conduct annual performance reviews of staff.

  • Act as a brand ambassador by representing the editorial team externally and internally

  •  Meet with or talk to readers or others in the field to ensure Ignites Asia is meeting their information needs and to find out where there may be gaps or opportunities.

Required skills and experience

We seek someone with strong intelligence, high energy, creativity, persistence and resilience. Understanding the characteristics and interests of our audience is very important. As a leader, you will motivate your team and help advance the industry dialogue.

  • At least seven years of business reporting and/or editing experience, including experience working on a daily or wire publication.

  • Experience helping reporters develop and advance.

  • Experience covering asset management is desirable but not essential.

  • Experience working a beat and knowing how to generate scoops, original story ideas and other content that distinguishes a publication.

  • Commitment to continuous improvement, a track record of demonstrating initiative and exhibiting creativity in your approach to your work.

  • Ability to recognise and respond to readers' needs.

  • A high personal standard of excellence and pride in the work you do.

  •  Curiosity and a desire to lead and influence an industry through rigorous, critical thought-provoking journalism.
