The role

The companies desk is looking for an acting assistant companies news editor to help lead the FT’s business coverage, with particular focus on the retail, luxury, consumer, telecoms and media sectors. Covering parental leave, this is a key position on the desk managing core FT stories from the largest of Europe’s luxury goods groups, to the listing ambitions of Shein and the legal battle over the future of News Corp.

The editor has wide latitude to commission stories, plan coverage and work with reporters to break news and devise high-impact stories. The role would suit a corporate reporter with a desire to move into editing or an editor with some sector expertise in the relevant areas (and most likely some reporting experience). This role could pick up other sector responsibilities, depending on the successful candidates skills and experience.

The right candidate would need to be a sharp copy editor, able to handle major breaking stories cleanly and quickly as well as honing longer pieces to ensure they really shine. They also need to develop a close working relationship with the relevant reporters, both in London and in overseas offices, to manage workflow, chase news and produce distinctive, agenda-setting content.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the text of our stories sings and the non-text elements are compelling
  • Incorporating data and visual elements into corporate stories as standard
  • Conceiving, planning and commissioning special projects, including series, investigations and data or visually-led story-telling
  • Coordinating coverage and commissioning across sectors, including liaising with other London desks and teams overseas
  • Deputising for colleagues on other sectors where required, as well as helping with the smooth running of the companies coverage more generally

This news editor will be expected to work regular Sunday shifts, as part of the desk rota.

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Thursday 5th December 2024.
