The Team Lead: Subject Matter Experts is responsible for leading SME team operations and driving the development of high-quality educational content and digital experiments across K-12 and Higher Ed. science, medical, literacy, and mathematics domains. The role combines team leadership, cross-functional project coordination, subject matter oversight, and support for strategic initiatives such as proposals, presales, and external collaborations. This person acts as a key link between SMEs, Product, Design, Unity/Development, and Learn teams to ensure content is delivered accurately, on time, and to a high scientific, pedagogical, and accessibility standard.
Key responsibilities
Team leadership and cross-functional coordination
- Supervise and coordinate the work of SMEs, managing workloads, priorities, and content quality
- Act as the main bridge between SMEs, Product, Design, Unity/Development, and Learn teams to ensure requirements are delivered on schedule
- Oversee workflow and ticketing processes, including task creation, follow-up, and final content checks before formal QA
- Lead requirement gathering for new content and translate pedagogical and subject-specific needs into clear, actionable tasks
Content ownership and development
- Oversee experiment and content design, review, and technical requirements across relevant domains, including science, medicine, literacy, and mathematics
- Review UI/UX, assets, and learning flows to ensure scientific or pedagogical accuracy and alignment with learning goals
- Ensure content is designed and reviewed in line with accessibility standards, including WCAG and other relevant educational accessibility requirements
- Support the full lifecycle of content and experiment development, from concept through production readiness
Strategic support and external collaboration
- Contribute to research proposals, presales activities, and supporting documentation for strategic partnerships and new business opportunities
- Collaborate with academic advisors, researchers, and other experts to ensure content and documentation meet required standards
- Prepare and deliver presentations, demonstrations, and supporting materials for internal and external stakeholders when needed
Support for key client engagements
- Support large or strategic client engagements where SME input is required, particularly for onboarding, implementation guidance, or resolving subject-specific content questions
- Provide expertise to help ensure correct setup and use of experiments and learning content in collaboration with internal platform teams
- Track usage and adoption of experiments or learning content for selected institutions and provide reporting when needed

- Good understanding of accessibility requirements, including WCAG or similar relevant standards
- High attention to detail and strong quality standards
Qualifications
Academic background
- Master’s or PhD degree in a relevant field such as Biology, Medical Sciences, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Physiology, Education, Learning Sciences, or a related discipline
Professional experience
- Experience in subject matter expert work, educational content development, or digital learning products
- Experience coordinating cross-functional teams such as Product, Design, Development, or platform teams
- Experience working with multiple subject areas or with SME teams across different domains is strongly preferred
Additional advantages
- Familiarity with workflow and ticketing tools such as Jira or YouTrack
- Experience with accessibility standards and inclusive learning design
