Research Internship at CKI - Global monitoring of use of Generative AI in higher education and science

Bremen, Germany

Position: Research Internship at CKI

Project: Global monitoring of use of Generative AI in higher education and science

Scientific supervisor: Prof. Dr. Isak Frumin

Introduction to CKI:

The Constructor Knowledge Institute (CKI) intends to set the worldwide standard for research into Computer Science, AI and Machine Learning, Robotics, and Neuroscience, operating in strong contact with industry, and:

  • Leveraging CS technologies to address challenges in various fields, delivering innovative solutions tailored to industry needs.
  • Providing research opportunities, mentorship, and involvement in collaborative projects to young researchers and PhDs.
  • Encouraging interdisciplinary research by fostering collaboration between diverse fields, emphasizing the integration of theoretical research with practical application

Project: Global monitoring of use of Generative AI in higher education and science

With this project, CKI aims to create a global network of researchers to exchange ideas, share empirical findings and advance understanding of the development and application of AI in higher education and the sciences. The project is focused on conducting comparative studies to examine institutional and national responses to AI, with a focus on identifying successful applications and their scalability across diverse educational and scientific contexts. Our team of researchers and partners employs advanced quantitative techniques, such as web scraping and text analysis, alongside qualitative methods. CKI plans to use these findings to produce a monitoring system, comparative books, and research articles.

Main questions:

  1. How is AI reshaping higher education and science?
  2. How is AI changing the nature of scientific knowledge and its production?
  3. How are changes in EdTech approaches and industries impacting education systems?

Lines of inquiry:

  1.  Comparative studies of higher education and research systems, organizations, communities, and policies in the context of AI related changes (STS, political sciences, sociology).
  2. Examine the intersection of AI technology with human processes in educational and research institutions, focusing on changes in knowledge production and skill integration. Analyze how AI-driven capabilities transform research teams, industries, and societal norms (psychology, sociology, management, computer science).
  3. The evolving relationship between industry, higher education, and research institutions, including trends in new AI-driven products (economics, political science, management)
  4. The changing landscape of AI-related research in education and science, using bibliometric analysis with natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLMs) (scientometrics, computational social science).

Projects:

Project 1: How Universities Navigate Generative AI

  • Focus: Comparative study of institutional responses to generative AI in different countries
  • Methods: Document analysis, and quantitative analysis of university websites (text mining).

Project 2: Web Scraping and Text Analysis of University Websites

  • Focus: Large-scale analysis of university websites for AI-related content.
  • Methods: Web scraping, NLP-based classification, topic modeling, and keyword extraction.

Project 3: Mapping Generative AI Research in Higher Education

  • Focus: Bibliometric analysis of publications (indexed in Scopus, OpenAlex).
  • Methods: Systematic literature review, bibliometric analysis, and NLP and LLM integration for abstract analysis.

Project 4: Research Teams and AI Integration

  • Focus: The integration of genAI specialists into research teams and the impact on outputs.
  • Methods: Web scraping, analysis of gathered dataset (quantitative research), and qualitative studies.

Requirements:

  • Web scrapping knowledge is a plus
  • Large text corpus analysis
