Role Overview:
The University is looking for an experienced Sound Engineer to provide expert support for lectures, events, and performances across both onsite and online platforms. This position involves configuring and operating professional audio systems, integrating them with video technology, and ensuring exceptional sound and visual quality for academic and cultural activities. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the events team, faculty, and technical staff to deliver seamless AV experiences. The role also includes contributing to projects aimed at enhancing current equipment setups and leading the upgrade and integration of new technologies into teaching spaces and events.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up, operate, and troubleshoot audio interfaces and routing equipment.
- Configure and optimize Midas systems to deliver high-quality sound for both live audiences and online (Zoom, Teams) participants.
- Provide sound reinforcement and mixing to ensure speakers and performers are clearly heard both locally and online.
- Connect and integrate Midas consoles with other devices such as Blackmagic and Focusrite hardware, enabling sound distribution for live events and streaming.
- Manage audio and video connectivity and ensure smooth AV signal flow for hybrid events.
- Set up and connect projectors, including ceiling-mounted installations, lecture rooms for teaching and event support.
- Collaborate with lecturers and the events team to meet AV requirements.
- Document audio/video setups, workflows, and best practices for training and knowledge sharing.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for both specialist staff and non-technical users.
- Perform routine system checks, maintenance and room upgrades of hardware.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Certified Sound engineering qualification or large portfolio of experience.
- Strong knowledge of audio interfaces, routing, recording, cabling and AV signal flow, including but not limited to integration with Blackmagic and Focusrite devices.
- Ability to balance live and online sound requirements, ensuring clarity and quality across platforms.
- Proficient with a wide range of audio gear such as microphones, mixers, equalizers, amplifiers, speakers etc.
- Setting up and maintaining projectors and standard AV presentation systems.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to support users of varying technical abilities.
- Hands-on experience working in live event or educational environments with complex AV setups.
Desirable Skills:
- Knowledge of hybrid/remote event streaming workflows
- Experience with Zoom, Teams and video conferencing systems.
- Knowledge of HDMI splitters, Kramer HDBaseT and HDMI extenders, Sennheiser products, Logitech, types of cabling.
- Understanding of room acoustics and lighting.
- Understanding of windows 11 and office 365 for daily use.
Qualifications:
- Certification or strong professional experience in audio engineering, sound technology, or audiovisual systems.
- Previous experience within a university, educational, or live event setting is highly desirable.
Additional Information:
- This role may require work outside regular office hours to support scheduled events.
- Some equipment handling and installation will involve manual lifting.
Desirable but not essential Skills:
- Experience with Q-Sys and Crestron
- I3Touch interactive digital whiteboard
- Experience with PTZ cameras
