Assistant In-House Lawyer

London, England, United Kingdom

Who we are:

Apollo is a specialised independent (re)insurer, established in 2009, to deliver top-tier products and services to clients, brokers, and capital partners at Lloyd’s. The name "Apollo" was inspired by the achievements of one of its founding investors, Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon in 1969. Together with Jim Hays, Neil identified an opportunity to create a unique service provider within Lloyd’s.

Since its inception, Apollo has significantly broadened its portfolio of insurance solutions. This includes Apollo 1969’s traditional and specialty lines, ibott 1971’s innovative sharing economy products, and managing agency services at Lloyd’s through our Platform Partner Syndicates. Today, Apollo continues to grow with team of 300 professionals dedicated to fulfilling the company’s mission of enabling a resilient and sustainable world.

“We attract and retain a diverse range of talent by fostering an inclusive, equitable team environment where individuals from all backgrounds have opportunities to grow, succeed, and contribute. We empower our teams to achieve excellence and drive forward-thinking solutions, aiming to enable a resilient and sustainable world.” - David Ibeson, Group CEO

Your Role

As Assistant In-House Lawyer, you will support Apollo’s Head of Legal in delivering clear, practical, and commercially focused legal advice across the business. This includes underwriting, claims, operations, and corporate functions, helping to ensure that all activity remains compliant with relevant laws, regulations, and Lloyd’s frameworks.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain broad legal exposure within a fast-paced Lloyd’s environment and play a hands-on role in shaping Apollo’s governance, regulatory, and contractual frameworks.

What You Will Do

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including supplier, service, outsourcing, and distribution contracts.
  • Provide advice on policy wordings, endorsements, and reinsurance documentation.
  • Support the Head of Legal with governance, corporate, and regulatory documentation.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on legal and regulatory obligations under the FCA, PRA, and Lloyd’s frameworks.
  • Manage and instruct external counsel, ensuring alignment with business priorities and cost efficiency.
  • Maintain and develop legal templates, playbooks, and guidance materials to ensure consistency and efficiency.
  • Contribute to legal and regulatory training across the business.
  • Monitor legal, regulatory, and market developments, providing concise updates to key stakeholders.

What We Are Looking For

  • Qualified solicitor (England & Wales) with around two years’ post-qualification experience gained in-house or within a recognised insurance, financial services, or corporate practice.
  • Proven experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts.
  • Understanding of the Lloyd’s or wider insurance market, and its regulatory environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, balancing technical precision with commercial pragmatism.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to provide clear advice to non-legal audiences.
  • Collaborative, proactive, and professional, with sound judgement and integrity.

What you will get in return:

Our compensation package is designed to attract top talent. In addition to a fair and attractive salary, this role offers a discretionary bonus and a comprehensive range of benefits, including 31 days of annual leave, a non-contributory pension and private medical insurance.
