About The Role
The Senior Automation Engineer plays a key role in designing, building, and maintaining advanced Jira Data Center automations at scale. This role requires a deep understanding of Jira internals, ScriptRunner Groovy development, and cross-system integrations. You will lead complex technical initiatives, optimize system performance, mentor mid-level engineers, and ensure the automation framework remains robust, reusable, and compliant with security and governance standards.

Responsibilities
Automation Architecture & Development
○ Design and implement scalable Jira automation components using ScriptRunner and Jira REST/Java APIs.
○ Build reusable Groovy utility libraries and shared frameworks for the team.
○ Architect integrations with enterprise systems (HRIS, Finance, GitHub, PostgreSQL, etc.).
Performance & Scaling
○ Optimize Jira Data Center performance across multiple nodes (indexing, caching, automation throughput).
○ Collaborate with DBAs to tune PostgreSQL performance, automate cleanup, and manage large datasets.
○ Lead automation performance benchmarking and refactoring efforts to improve efficiency.
Governance & Reliability
○ Maintain backup and restore standards for automation scripts, workflows, and configurations.
○ Conduct disaster recovery simulations and ensure data restoration readiness.
○ Audit automation for security, performance, and compliance (GDPR, data protection).
○ Implement structured logging and monitoring (Graylog, Grafana).
○ Enforce version control and peer review standards across all automation assets.
○ Implement automated validation and linting pipelines for Groovy scripts and configuration exports.
Collaboration & Leadership
○ Mentor Middle Engineers on scripting, architecture, and problem-solving approaches.
○ Review complex automation code for maintainability and adherence to best practices.
○ Work closely with the Automation Team Lead and business stakeholders to align automation priorities with company goals.
○ Contribute to the automation CI/CD pipeline, ensuring controlled deployment, testing, and rollback strategies.
○ Drive internal automation documentation standards and maintain a central knowledge base in Confluence.
Required Skills & Experience
- Experience: 4+ years of Jira Administration, Automation, and ScriptRunner development in Jira Data Center.
- Technical Mastery:
○ Advanced Groovy scripting and REST/Java API integration skills.
○ Proven experience with ScriptRunner listeners, post-functions, validators, and REST endpoints.
○ Strong knowledge of Jira internals — caching, indexing, and performance optimization. ○ Experience with Assets/Insight schema design for multi-company and large-scale environments. ○ Proficiency with Git, branching strategies, and code review workflows.
○ Proficiency in analyzing Jira logs, thread dumps, and GC metrics to diagnose automation-related performance issues.
○ Experience troubleshooting complex workflows and ScriptRunner executions in clustered environments.
- Infrastructure Awareness: Familiarity with PostgreSQL tuning, Linux-based Jira administration, and Docker environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines for Jira automation deployment.
- Familiarity with ScriptRunner, Structure and Advanced Roadmaps.
- Experience integrating Jira with BambooHR, Tempo, Vaultwarden, or similar systems
- Knowledge of Atlassian ecosystem APIs and plugin development.
- Experience designing monitoring dashboards for automation metrics using Grafana or Kibana.
- Understanding of data security, GDPR, and enterprise compliance frameworks.
