Head of Engineering, Geo and Operations Platforms

Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

Ever imagined saying, “I helped launch the future of transportation”?

We’re rewriting the rules of urban mobility. At Vay, customers tap a button and a car arrives - with no one inside - powered by our world-first Remote Driving technology on real public streets.

We’re live in Las Vegas and scaling fast, powered by a strategic investment of up to $410 million from Grab. Our mission is simple: replace private car ownership with a faster, cleaner, door-to-door mobility model. If you want to build something real, visible, and genuinely transformative, you’ll feel right at home here.

What’s happening at Vay

  • First to roll out vehicles in both Europe and the USA on public roads without a human being inside & currently the 2nd largest commercial, driverless car fleet in the Western World.
  • We've partnered with Kodiak to bring remote-driving technology to autonomous trucks in the US, showcasing our ability to integrate our system into heavy-duty commercial vehicles and expand the applications of our tech across the US.
  • We’ve completed 10’s of thousands of trips so far and are busy multiplying our Las Vegas fleet just to meet demand!
  • ...And soon we’ll be expanding across the US & Europe 🚀

Why this role is exciting

This is one of the most critical engineering leadership roles at Vay. You will own the strategy, architecture, and reliability of the internal platforms that power our 24/7 operations and the geo capabilities that define how our vehicles navigate the real world. We’re hiring this role to scale mission-critical systems that directly impact throughput, safety, ETAs, and the overall customer experience, bridging cloud software, real-time vehicle data, and operational excellence into one cohesive platform.

What you’ll be driving

  • You will set the technical direction for our Operations Software suite and geo/routing stack, ensuring our operators and teledrivers have reliable, intuitive, high-performance tools to run and scale the fleet.
  • Own the technical strategy and roadmap for internal operations tools and geo capabilities, tightly aligned to clear operational KPIs
  • Lead multiple engineering teams across web, mobile, backend, and integrations with high standards for quality, velocity, reliability, and security
  • Design and build mission-critical systems with high availability, graceful degradation, offline modes, robust RBAC, audit ability, and strong incident response practices
  • Bridge software and hardware by integrating vehicle telematics, edge gateways, and connectivity layers into scalable cloud services
  • Partner cross-functionally with Data Science and Safety Engineering to shape ODD design, automation, and real-time routing and navigation capabilities
  • Collaborate with peer product engineering teams to optimize end-to-end consumer ETAs and dispatch performance
  • Drive operator-loved UX by reducing manual touches, automating repetitive workflows, and surfacing proactive alerts
  • Operationalize reliability through clear SLOs/SLIs, strong observability, structured on-call rotations, and disciplined post-mortems while building and mentoring high-performing teams across US/EU time zones

What are we looking for

  • You are a senior engineering leader who has built and scaled mission-critical operational platforms and knows how to connect complex software systems with real-world hardware environments.
  • 10+ years in software engineering, with 5+ years leading teams delivering high-availability internal tools or operational platforms in mobility, logistics, marketplace, or similar environments
  • Deep experience in cloud-native architectures (AWS or equivalent), microservices/APIs, event-driven systems, caching, and modern web/mobile stacks
  • Proven track record integrating software with hardware or IoT systems, including telematics/edge data and protocols such as MQTT, HTTP, WebSockets, or gRPC
  • Strong foundation in reliability engineering (HA design, SLOs/SLIs, observability, incident management) and security best practices (RBAC, least privilege, audit trails, PII protection)
  • Experience building internal tools that operators genuinely adopt and value, with a hands-on, user-centric mindset
  • Strong cross-functional leadership across Product, Operations, Support, Data, and Security/IT, translating operational pain points into measurable roadmaps
  • Experience integrating with telematics/fleet systems, CRM/ticketing tools, identity/SSO, and data platforms is a plus
