(Senior) Control Engineer
Ever imagined saying, “I helped launch the future of transportation”?
We’re rewriting the rules of urban mobility. At Vay, customers tap a button and a car arrives - with no one inside - powered by our world-first Remote Driving technology on real public streets.
We’re live in Las Vegas and scaling fast, powered by a strategic investment of up to $410 million from Grab. Our mission is simple: replace private car ownership with a faster, cleaner, door-to-door mobility model. If you want to build something real, visible, and genuinely transformative, you’ll feel right at home here.
What’s happening at Vay
- First to roll out vehicles in both Europe and the USA on public roads without a human being inside & currently the 2nd largest commercial, driverless car fleet in the Western World.
- We've partnered with Kodiak to bring remote-driving technology to autonomous trucks in the US, showcasing our ability to integrate our system into heavy-duty commercial vehicles and expand the applications of our tech across the US.
- We’ve completed 10’s of thousands of trips so far and are busy multiplying our Las Vegas fleet just to meet demand!
- ...And soon we’ll be expanding across the US & Europe 🚀
Why this role is exciting
At Vay, cars are remotely operated in real time from Driving Centers in Berlin and Las Vegas. This is a capability only a handful of companies worldwide have achieved on public roads.
As a (Senior) Control Engineer, you will sit at the core of our motion and vehicle control efforts, working closely with embedded software, hardware, systems engineering, and testing teams to improve control performance, robustness, and safety. Your work will have direct, real world impact on the teledriver experience, passenger comfort, and the reliability of our remote driving operations.
While we scale our fleet and capabilities, you will help scale and adapt our control algorithms to different vehicle platforms while maturing our validation infrastructure alongside it. You will step into an experienced, highly technical team working on problems with very few industry precedents, while still having meaningful ownership, influence, and room to grow.
What you'll be driving
You will be a hands-on contributor focused on designing, validating, and improving vehicle control functionality, with a strong emphasis on robustness, testability, and real world performance.
- Control algorithms: Design, implement, and verify model based control algorithms for remotely operated vehicles
- Validation infrastructure: Extend and maintain validation environments including simulation, hardware in the loop (HIL), and in vehicle testing
- Testing campaigns: Drive testing and calibration campaigns with organising and supporting track tests onsite for data collection and controller tuning.
- Data and analysis: Support data collection, data management, processing, and analysis to evaluate control performance and identify improvement areas
- Automation: Improve automation across development, testing, and validation workflows to increase reliability and development velocity
- Cross functional collaboration: Work closely with embedded software, hardware, and systems engineers to ensure seamless integration and robust end to end control performance
What are we looking for
You will be a hands-on (Senior) Control Engineer with a solid technical foundation who is comfortable working across control design, testing, and validation. You are pragmatic, detail oriented, and motivated by seeing your work operate safely and reliably in the real world.
- Control Engineering Experience: Strong experience using MATLAB and Simulink for model based control design and strong understanding of control fundamentals
- Vehicle dynamics: Familiarity with vehicle dynamics fundamentals
- Testing and validation: Experience working with simulation environments, HIL setups, and or in vehicle validation
- Problem solving: A structured, analytical approach to debugging, performance evaluation, and system improvement
- Collaboration: Ability to work effectively across disciplines in a complex, safety critical system
- Autonomous execution: Comfortable contributing independently while integrating smoothly into a small, experienced team. Being comfortable and flexible to work in a fast paced environment with ambitious deliverables and changing priorities.
Nice to have:
- Familiarity with code generation workflows
- Experience with AUTOSAR blocksets
- Knowledge of C for embedded systems
