Senior Engineering Manager, Remote Driving Software

Berlin, Germany

Ever imagined saying, “I helped launch the future of transportation”?

We’re rewriting the rules of urban mobility. At Vay, customers tap a button and a car arrives - with no one inside - powered by our world-first Remote Driving technology on real public streets.

We’re live in Las Vegas and scaling fast, powered by a strategic investment of up to $410 million from Grab. Our mission is simple: replace private car ownership with a faster, cleaner, door-to-door mobility model. If you want to build something real, visible, and genuinely transformative, you’ll feel right at home here.

What’s happening at Vay:

  • First to roll out vehicles in both Europe and the USA on public roads without a human being inside & one of only two companies in the States operating a commercial driverless service.
  • We've partnered with Kodiak to bring remote-driving technology to autonomous trucks in the Bay Area, showcasing our ability to integrate our system into heavy-duty commercial vehicles and expand the applications of our tech across the US.
  • We’ve completed 10’s of thousands of trips so far and are busy multiplying our Las Vegas fleet just to meet demand!
  • ...And soon we’ll be expanding across the US & Europe 🚀

Why this role is exciting

As a Director or Senior Engineering Manager for our Core Remote Driving Software at Vay, you will lead and grow two critical engineering teams, Platform and Media, responsible for the real time software foundations of our remote driving product. These teams build and operate the core platform and low latency audio and video streaming systems that run on high performance computers across our vehicles and remote driving stations, enabling safe remote operation at scale.

Beyond team leadership, you will own the technical direction of the compute platform itself, including the evaluation and selection of vehicle and station hardware for our driverless fleet. Because these systems operate in real time and in safety critical environments, performance monitoring, reliability, and the tooling that supports them are central to the role and have a direct impact on how our vehicles operate on public roads without a safety driver.

At Vay, we value engineering leaders who stay close to the technology while scaling teams and systems. In this role, you will guide architectural decisions, remove obstacles for your teams, and build a high performing engineering culture grounded in focus, ownership, and excellence. Working closely with the founder and senior leadership, you will play a key role in shaping our long term technical direction, how we operate as an engineering organisation, and how we safely scale remote driving on public roads.

What you’ll be driving

You will lead, scale, and technically guide the Platform and Media engineering teams, owning the vision and execution of core remote driving software that powers Vay’s driverless fleet.

In order to do that, you will:

  • Lead and scale the Platform and Media engineering teams, owning the delivery of core real time platform and media systems
  • Define and drive modern software engineering practices, ensuring high quality, reliability, and predictable delivery
  • Partner with technical leads to shape roadmaps, priorities, and long term technical direction
  • Review designs and guide architectural decisions for performance and safety critical systems
  • Build, coach, and develop engineers through clear expectations, feedback, and career growth
  • Own hiring for your teams in close collaboration with Talent
  • Stay hands on where it adds the most value, contributing up to 25% of the time
  • Collaborate closely with product, program, and cross functional teams to drive alignment and execution

This might be a great fit, if:

You are a senior engineering leader who enjoys owning complex, real time systems end to end, from technical direction and architecture through to production operation

  • You have led multiple high performing engineering teams of 5 to 10 engineers, with a proven track record of scaling and developing teams
  • You are passionate about improving engineering productivity and enabling other teams across the organisation
  • You bring strong proficiency in C++ and Linux, with experience working close to the system in performance critical environments
  • You have worked on embedded or real time systems where reliability, latency, and resource constraints are critical to success
  • You are a clear and effective communicator, comfortable aligning stakeholders and driving decisions across teams and levels
  • You operate with a high sense of urgency and ownership in fast moving environments
Nice to have:
  • Experience working with Robot Operating System (ROS)
  • Experience with hardware or compute platform evaluation and selection
