The role  

Overview:

Technical leader with strong consultancy and communication skills focused on one or two key domains, guiding teams and client stakeholders toward the right outcomes. You bring clear authority, calm presence, and a proactive drive toward business and technology objectives and aspirations. You set direction early, communicate decisions and trade-offs plainly, and collaborate across product, design, and engineering to keep everyone aligned. You’re visible and available to the teams and client stakeholders, breaking down silos, showing up in the moments that matter to clarify scope, de-risk assumptions, and keep momentum. Your communication is clear and empathetic, you listen first, and turn ambiguity into an agreed plan of action. You generally work across teams as a facilitator and multiplier; you create the conditions for good decisions. You ask the right questions, surface constraints and commercial realities, and frame options with explicit impacts on time, cost, risk, and user value. Your credibility comes from relevant, demonstrable experience, being able to point to prior outcomes and lessons learned rather than only referencing theory. You are defining the problem, shaping the approach, guiding teams through trade-offs, and driving change through to measurable results, rather than waiting for tickets. You drive improvements in our engineering capabilities and development practices, ensuring we think strategically and crucially move from concept to execution, effectively driving measurable results.

Role responsibilities:

  • Guiding teams back to the problem space before jumping into solutions, ensuring solutions are viable, relevant, and thought through.
  • Proactively influencing and guiding how we make decisions, the principles and practices we adopt, how we identify and manage complexity, risk, technical change management, and dependencies.
  • Facilitating collaboration and ensuring alignment with business goals.
  • Balancing long-term architectural vision with immediate delivery needs, ensuring sustainable solutions.
  • Engaging with developers, product teams, and business stakeholders to promote architectural clarity and adoption.
  • Mentoring developers, fostering technical excellence, and good practices across teams.

 

Must have qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must meet the following essential qualifications: 

  • Defines and coordinates adherence to architectural principles, facilitating pragmatic decisions through communication of trade-offs against design goals that align with both technical and business goals.
  • Guides teams to ensure software is being designed to meet best practices and ensures key NFRs (maintainability, performance, scalability, and security), and ensures a strategy is in place to validate those NFRs.
  • Provides expert consultancy and specialist advice by taking responsibility for engaging with clients and stakeholders to understand business objectives, competing constraints, and providing informed architectural guidance. Ensures options are well communicated and the impact understood by teams and key stakeholders.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert in domain or platform areas and proactively offers insights into best practices and emerging trends.
  • Paves the way for teams, avoiding pulling in unnecessary tech debt, identifying complexity and risk early, and identifying which decisions can be deferred until later, ensuring smooth and effective software delivery
