From award-winning summits to major industry gatherings, these events tackle themes of global importance and attract a highly influential audience from government, business, academia, and NGOs. Attendees are drawn by the depth of Economist content, while sponsors value access to this coveted audience. For clients of The Economist Group, event sponsorship provides a powerful platform for branding, engagement, and messaging—making it an essential part of the marketing mix.

The Senior Business Development Manager’s responsibility is to drive sponsorship sales for events in the Asia region. This includes the full portfolio of event sponsorship opportunities on our scheduled events calendar. 

In the role you would be expected to:

  • Meet or exceed sponsorship sales targets
  • Grow a new client base in the region 
  • Develop a renewal strategy for existing clients
  • Work with the wider sales team to maximise cross-sell opportunities 
  • Work closely with marketing, programming, operations, and the Global Events team
  • Manage client relationships throughout the sponsorship lifecycle and work on renewal discussions
  • Monitor and report on personal and event revenue in the region
  • Develop an understanding of the Economist brand’s positioning in the global market as well ensuring adherence to editorial guidelines

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Track record of building sales revenue and developing new business 
  • Ability to work independently to create new business opportunities
  • Experience in event-related sponsorship sales is essential
  • Experience presenting to and negotiating with senior decision-makers of large multi-national corporations
  • A good team player with the ability to think strategically and tactically
  • Flexibility to travel
  • Strong written and spoken English (fluent / native)
  • Asian language abilities a distinct advantage

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • A self-starter, able to work and research new business and pitch to prospective clients
  • Ability to be a results-oriented person with the drive and determination to succeed
  • Ability to be an excellent communicator with a strong presence, good presentation skills and rapport with clients at senior and management level
  • Ability to be independent and resourceful, but totally committed to being part of a dynamic regional team
  • Ability to meet deadlines and cope well under pressure
  • Good awareness of economic and political issues affecting business investment and operations in the region
  • Ability to be well-organised and efficient with excellent time management skills to meet target and deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Persistence in meeting pre-set targets and aiming high if targets are met

The majority of our roles operate on a hybrid working pattern, with 3+ days office attendance required.
