Software Engineer 3

Birmingham

Who we are

We are an organisation that exists to drive progress. That's the “red thread” that connects everyone at The Economist Group (TEG). Our businesses share a devotion to innovation, independence and rigour in their fields of expertise. We empower people to understand and tackle the critical challenges and changes facing the world. Our analytical rigour, global expertise and evidence-based insights enable individuals and organisations to make sense of these shifts and chart a course through them.

We deliver analysis and insights in many formats to subscribers and clients in 170 countries through our four businesses, The Economist, Economist Impact, Economist Intelligence and Economist Education, which uphold our global reputation for excellence and integrity.

We are hiring a polyglot Software Engineer (SE3) to join one of our cross-functional product teams at The Economist. You will help build and operate full-stack systems that power critical parts of the customer journey - either in subscription purchase and checkout flows, or in post-subscription account management. You will work with a modern TypeScript stack, develop backend services in multiple languages, and contribute to the team’s engineering culture and delivery outcomes.

How you will contribute in this role

  • Design, build and operate full-stack features using TypeScript and Next.js (App Router, Server Actions)
  • Contribute to backend systems written in Go. Prior Go experience is not required - we are happy to support engineers who want to learn on the job
  • Deliver production-ready code with reliability, observability, and scalability in mind
  • Improve and maintain CI/CD pipelines, IaC code, and cloud infrastructure in AWS
  • Monitor and debug issues using observability tools like New Relic
  • Collaborate with product, delivery and QA to deliver user-facing features and enhancements
  • Participate in solution design and architecture discussions
  • Support and mentor other engineers through pairing, code reviews, and documentation
  • Contribute to continuously improving team practices, tools, and technical standards

What we are looking for

  • Strong professional experience with TypeScript and modern JavaScript frameworks (Next.js preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with at least one backend language is essential (Go, Java, Python, Rust or C#)
  • A polyglot mindset - you enjoy learning new tools and are open to working across different languages and stacks
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices: CI/CD, infrastructure as code (e.g. Terraform, CDK), containers (using ECS Fargate)
  • Awareness of observability practices, and the ability to use dashboards to detect and address issues
  • A focus on clear, maintainable code and a pragmatic, test-first approach
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative, low-ego approach to problem solving
  • A willingness to work across the stack and own your work through to production
