Engineering Manager

Indonesia - Remote

Who we are

We are an organisation that exists to drive progress. That's the “red thread” that connects everyone at The Economist Group (TEG). Our businesses share a devotion to innovation, independence and rigour in their fields of expertise. We empower people to understand and tackle the critical challenges and changes facing the world. Our analytical rigour, global expertise and evidence-based insights enable individuals and organisations to make sense of these shifts and chart a course through them.

We deliver analysis and insights in many formats to subscribers and clients in 170 countries through our four businesses, The Economist, Economist Impact, Economist Intelligence and Economist Education, which uphold our global reputation for excellence and integrity.

The Economist Group is a global media and information services company that exists to champion progress. We provide individuals and organisations with the expertise, insights and perspective to press forward.

The vision of the Economist’s engineering team is to create the world's leading digital newspaper, making all the important journalism our editorial team produces available to our global audience, which spans 159 countries with an active subscriber base of 1.1 million people. As a technology and data-driven business, we recognise the key role outstanding engineers and engineering managers play in helping us achieve our goals.

We use a diverse range of modern technologies and processes, building cloud-hosted solutions with a focus on global reach, performance and observability. We believe in using the right tool for the job, so we build our software with several programming languages including Go, TypeScript, React, Python and various .NET languages.

About the Role:

As we expand our B2B offerings across Enterprise, Partnerships, and our fast-evolving Generative AI initiatives, we are looking for a technically strong, people-centric Engineering Manager to lead a high-impact team based in Indonesia. This role is instrumental to our next phase of growth and innovation across key product lines.

You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team of 6-8 engineers working across backend systems, partner integrations, and GenAI-powered features. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of our B2B and AI technology stack, nurture high-performing talent, and collaborate cross-functionally with global engineering, product, design, QA, and delivery teams.

If you bring deep backend engineering experience, working knowledge of frontend frameworks like React, and a genuine curiosity for (or hands-on experience with) Generative AI technologies, we’d love to hear from you.

How you will contribute:

If you can do most of what we are looking for, you could be exactly what we need! Consider applying even if you’re not sure you tick every box.

You will

  • Manage and support a team of engineers through regular 1:1s, coaching, performance feedback, and career development. Foster an inclusive, growth-oriented team culture.
  • Partner closely with your Technical Lead, Product Manager, Design Lead, and QA Lead to scope, prioritise, and deliver both iterative enhancements and strategic platform initiatives
  • Contribute to engineering strategy and practices. Shape processes, team rituals, and tooling that enable your team to deliver high-quality code efficiently and safely..
  • Steer architectural decisions for enterprise capabilities such as partner integrations, APIs, authentication flows, analytics pipelines, and custom dashboards.
  • Collaborate with GenAI teams to prototype and launch new user experiences powered by large language models and other machine learning systems..
  • Remain hands-on where appropriate through architectural input, technical design reviews, and proof-of-concept development (up to 30% of your time).
  • Take full ownership of systems in your domain, ensuring observability, uptime, performance, documentation, and operational readiness.
  • Track and control service-level costs, build usage reports and dashboards, and contribute to overall financial accountability.
  • Identify team needs, define ideal skill sets, and collaborate with our Talent team to attract, assess, and onboard outstanding engineers..
  • Understand the productivity of your teams and the factors affecting productivity and intervening when required.

To succeed in this role it would be an advantage if you possess:

  • Several years of experience leading high-performing engineering teams delivering customer-facing products (B2B or B2C).
  • A solid technical background as a software engineer (5+ years) with expertise in backend languages such as Go, TypeScript, Python, Java, or similar.
  • Working knowledge of modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Next.js) and a collaborative mindset toward cross-stack development
  • Deep familiarity with AWS or other cloud platforms, and an understanding of modern DevOps and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Strong grasp of API architecture, authentication/authorisation standards (OAuth2, SSO), and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Experience with observability tools (metrics, logs, alerts) and FinOps principles for managing cloud spend.
  • A track record of building or maintaining 24/7 production systems in globally distributed environments..
  • Experience in developing B2B or B2C platforms involving customer and partner-facing features
  • Interest in or experience with Generative AI technologies and LLM-based applications.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to foster clarity, alignment, and trust across distributed teams.
  • A collaborative, humble mindset. You’re energized by solving problems with others, not by being the smartest person in the room.

Why Join Us:

  • Lead mission-critical initiatives in a fast-growing, global company.
  • Work on cutting-edge GenAI use cases with real-world impact
  • Collaborate with passionate, world-class teams across Asia, Europe, and the US.
  • Influence product direction at a strategic level, not just sprint by sprint.
  • A supportive leadership team that prioritises autonomy, trust, and continuous learning.
