Job Title: DevOps Engineer – Card-Transaction Clearing

Location: Hybrid – 1 fixed office day (Tuesday) plus a second day to be agreed
Start Date: ASAP
Duration: 12 months, with strong likelihood of extension

About the Team

You will join the Payments, Cards & Cash Chapter (≈ 85 professionals). The DevOps squad itself has 10 engineers; one is leaving, creating this vacancy.

The squad owns the full clearing & settlement flow for debit, credit and mobile-card transactions.


Mission & Scope

  • Process ~ 2 million transactions per day, receiving clearing files from Visa and Mastercard.

  • Validate, enrich, and book transactions, excluding blocked cards before final posting.

  • Keep high-volume batch and online services reliable, performant and compliant.

  • Support both the current platform (≈ 18 months more in production) and a green-field replacement now being built.


Core Tech Stack

Area Primary Tools / Tech
OS & Infra Linux (main), minimal Windows Server, VMs in the client’s private cloud, moving to Azure-based internal hosting
Containers Kubernetes & OpenShift (deployments/pipelines)
Databases Oracle in the client’s cloud; maintained by the engineering team (patching, tuning, query optimisation)
Applications 2 vendor systems + 3 in-house batch Java apps
CI/CD Azure DevOps (end-to-end pipeline ownership)
Scripting Shell & Python
Observability ELK stack, plus fitness-function tests

Ways of Working

  • Agile / Scrum, with strong pair-programming culture.

  • 24 × 7 stand-by rotation (shared roster).

  • Close collaboration with neighbouring authorisation and risk teams during migration to the new supplier platform.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor and support all card-clearing services in production.

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, infra-as-code and automated tests.

  • Optimise Oracle queries, schedule patching and remediate vulnerabilities.

  • Contribute to container-first architecture and deprecate legacy VMs.

  • Proactively address risk, security and compliance requirements in every change.


Must-Have Skills (Killer Criteria)

  1. Deep Linux administration in high-availability environments.

  2. Oracle DB expertise (maintenance, tuning, patching).

  3. Hands-on CI/CD pipeline experience – ideally Azure DevOps.

  4. Solid monitoring/logging know-how (ELK or similar).

  5. Proven application-support background (incident, root-cause, performance).

Bonus Points

  • Kubernetes / OpenShift in production

  • Payment-domain or card-network experience

  • Visa/Mastercard file-processing know-how

  • Strong pair-programming & Agile mindset
