Senior Scala Engineer
About the Role
We’re looking for a Senior Scala Engineer with strong functional programming expertise and modern software engineering skills to join ING NL via Sytac. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to high-impact customer-facing systems in a complex, data-driven environment.
You will be part of the Customer Data Area, a cornerstone of ING’s digital ecosystem. This team ensures ING customers—both private and business—can seamlessly manage their personal data and mandates, enabling vital banking journeys such as account access, transactions, loans, and mortgages.
Your Responsibilities
As a Dev Engineer, you will:

Design and build scalable, secure, high-performance backend services in Scala

Develop and maintain robust REST APIs and stream-based systems

Implement test automation, monitoring, and CI/CD practices
-
Handle incident, change, and problem management (in line with ITIL)

Contribute to team processes, architecture discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives

Support production environments and stakeholders with analysis and troubleshooting
Must-Have Skills

3–4+ years of Scala experience, with solid functional programming foundations

Experience with:

Designing scalable REST APIs

Message queues like Kafka (preferred) or RabbitMQ

Scala libraries: cats, cats-effect, circe, fs2
-
Akka ecosystem: HTTP, Streams, Actors

Testing frameworks: Testcontainers, Pacts, Mockito

Proficient with:

CI/CD pipelines (Azure Pipelines preferred)

Linux environments
-
Agile/Scrum methodologies

ITIL principles (Incident, Problem, and Change Management)

Nice-to-Have Skills

Experience with Finagle and Finch

Monitoring tools: Prometheus, Grafana
