Plastics Expert

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Company Description Systemiq is a system-change company committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement by transforming markets and business models in five key systems: nature and food, materials and circularity, energy, urban areas, and sustainable finance. As a certified B Corp, we combine strategic advisory with high-impact, on-the-ground work, partnering with business, finance, policy-makers, and civil society to deliver system change. With offices in Brazil, France, Germany, UK, Netherlands, and Indonesia, our team has grown to more than 380 people since our start in 2016. We are a pure-play sustainability-focused company, dedicated exclusively to sustainability projects.

What We Do Systemiq orchestrates system change in clean energy, circular material solutions, and sustainable land use. This involves re-imagining industries, re-configuring the energy world, and regenerating ecosystems to address systemic failures, unlocking economic opportunities that benefit business, society, and the environment.

About the Plastics & Circular Economy Team

Our plastics work has contributed to the global debate on plastics, with world-class reports including “Breaking the Plastic Wave”, “ReShaping Plastics”, and “Plastic Treaty Future” providing the North Star of where the plastic system needs to go. Additionally, we have supported global coalitions such as the Consumer Goods Forum Coalition of Action on Plastic Waste, the 4evergreen Alliance and the Global Partnership for Action on Plastic (GPAP), and have participated in the Business Coalition for a Global Plastic Treaty. Systemiq also provides advisory services to leading companies, governments, and multi-lateral organisations (e.g., World Bank, UN, World Economic Forum, etc) on solutions for the plastic challenge.

We are seeking an expert in plastics and chemical engineering with a keen interest in sustainability and value chain dynamics to join our team. This role will provide critical technical insights to support our project teams and partners in understanding and optimizing the lifecycle of plastic materials within a circular economy framework. • Research & Data Analysis: Help gather, analyze, and interpret data related to plastics value chains, contributing insights to guide strategy and client recommendations.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Assist in communicating complex technical information to non-expert audiences, ensuring clarity in sustainability goals and project impact.

Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field with a focus on sustainability.
  • Experience: 3-7 years of technical experience in roles related to one or more of the following areas, demonstrating a solid understanding of value chains:
  • Plastics, materials science, petrochemicals, mobility and transport, heavy industries, energy, consumer goods, manufacturing, construction, waste management, or electronics.
  • Knowledge of circular economy principles and experience in applying systems-change concepts is a strong advantage.
  • Analytical Skills: Proficient in data analysis and problem-solving, particularly as it relates to chemical engineering processes and sustainability assessments.
  • Team Collaboration: A collaborative team player who is eager to contribute to impactful sustainability projects. Experience working in a cross-functional or international team environment is a plus.
  • Passion for Sustainability: Demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability and interest in circular economy initiatives.
  • Adaptability and Drive: Able to thrive in an evolving environment, balancing technical rigor with practical, solution-oriented thinking.
