Senior Strategy Associate

Sao Paulo, Brazil

Company Description Systemiq is a system-change company committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement by transforming markets and business models in five key systems: nature and food, materials and circularity, energy, urban areas, and sustainable finance. As a certified B Corp, we combine strategic advisory with high-impact, on-the-ground work, partnering with business, finance, policy-makers, and civil society to deliver system change. With offices in Brazil, France, Germany, UK, Netherlands, and Indonesia, our team has grown to more than 380 people since our start in 2016. We are a pure-play sustainability-focused company, dedicated exclusively to sustainability projects.

What We Do Systemiq orchestrates system change in clean energy, circular material solutions, and sustainable land use. This involves re-imagining industries, re-configuring the energy world, and regenerating ecosystems to address systemic failures, unlocking economic opportunities that benefit business, society, and the environment.

SYSTEMIQ is an organisation driving system change in clean energy, circular material solutions and sustainable land use. By addressing failures in these areas, SYSTEMIQ aims to unlock economic opportunities that benefit business, society and the environment. We connect the right people, ideas, technologies, and capital to transform economic systems. We do this through five activities:

Convene and support coalitions of leaders to shape policies and business strategies that will rapidly transform economic activity;

Work with companies that want to be pioneers in and drivers of change towards more sustainable systems;

Co-create and incubate the market solutions most likely to build regenerative economic systems;

Invest our own venture capital and expertise in opportunities with the biggest potential to drive rapid system change;

Direct larger pools of capital into regenerative economic systems, so that these scale and multiply.

In order to deliver in these areas, we recruit and develop distinctive and varied individuals who strive to achieve our mission, challenge the status quo and act as change leaders.

The Energy Transitions Commission

The ETC is a global coalition of over 40 leading global executives from across the energy landscape (energy companies, energy-intensive industries, equipment providers, investors, environmental NGOs and academics). Its mission is to define how to most effectively transition to net-zero carbon energy systems that also enable economic prosperity, and how to accelerate the required action from public and private decision-makers. The ETC is chaired by Lord Adair Turner. Its secretariat is hosted by SYSTEMIQ.

The ETC positions itself as a unique voice in the global and regional climate/energy debates (due to the diversity of its membership), a thought-partner for policymakers, private sector players and civil society stakeholders, and a convener of action-oriented high-level discussions, able to bring around the same table a varied range of stakeholders to orchestrate in-depth, analytically-robust debates on specific aspects of the transition that can truly inform and build support for ambitious actions.

A robust, fact-based approach is the calling-card of the ETC. ETC research covers all key dimensions of the transition to a net-zero GHG economy and is developed in partnership with industry and expert stakeholders. In 2018, the ETC published Mission Possible, the first global report outlining how to reach net-zero carbon emissions in the harder-to-abate sectors of the economy – heavy industry and heavy-duty transport – by mid-century. In 2020 and 2021 the ETC built on this analysis with an economy-wide report Making Mission Possible, and targeted reports on Clean Electrification and Clean Hydrogen. Building on these global reports, the ETC works to inform policymaking across several regions, including in China where it has just published a ground-breaking report on China 2050: A Fully Developed Rich Zero-Carbon Economy, and India, where it recently published a report on The Potential Role of Hydrogen in India.

In 2021, the Energy Transitions Commission is refocusing its activities on transforming insights into impact by pursuing 4 major objectives:

  • Making the ETC messages mainstream to build consensus on the technical and economic feasibility of the transition to net-zero carbon energy and industrial systems by 2050-2060, and on how to achieve this goal;
  • Catalysing action from businesses and finance players to decarbonise the harder-to-abate sectors of the economy through the Mission Possible Platform, a partnership between the ETC and the World Economic Forum;
  • Informing the public debate in 5 major regions (China, India, Europe, US and Australia); and,
  • Defining realistic pathways to zero-carbon energy systems focusing on quadrupling power generation, achieving a ten-fold increase in hydrogen, developing the bioeconomy in a truly sustainable way and scaling up CCS and negative emissions technologies.
