People Systems Engineer

South Africa

About Stitch

Stitch is a payments infrastructure company on a mission to make it easier for enterprise businesses to connect to the financial system and build better experiences for their customers.

We are expanding the team to enable Stitch to broaden our product offering and extend our geographical footprint.

About the role

The People Systems Engineer is the engineering layer behind Stitch's People function, building, integrating, and automating the systems that let the function run with minimal manual work. The role is built around writing scripts, building integrations, designing pipelines, and shipping internal tooling that eliminates the operational drag from People processes.

This is an engineering hire embedded in People whose role is to build the systems that make their work efficient, accurate, and audit-ready. As part of a small, scaling team, this person is empowered to identify where engineering creates leverage and ship the solutions themselves.

Key responsibilities

  1. People Systems Ownership: Own the People tech stack from an engineering perspective — HRIS (BambooHR), performance platform (15Five), ATS, EoR (Deel), payroll systems, and others. Configure, integrate, and maintain the stack. Build custom integrations where vendor capabilities fall short. Manage APIs, webhooks, authentication, and data flows between systems.
  2. Automation & Workflow Engineering: Build automations and workflows that eliminate manual work across People processes. Beyond no-code: write scripts, build integrations, design data pipelines, and ship internal tools. The goal is a People function where the operational layer is largely self-running, freeing PBPs to focus on judgment work.
  3. Document Generation Systems: Build the engineering layer for employment document generation — contracts, addendums, letters, offer documents — pulling directly from systems data. Maintain the templating engine, integrate it with People workflows, and ensure routine documents generate themselves. Templates and legal accuracy are owned by the PBPs and Legal; this role owns the systems that produce the documents.
  4. People Data Infrastructure & Analytics: Build and maintain the data pipelines that power People reporting and analytics. Partner with our data team where they own the warehouse and core dashboards, and own the People-side of the data work — system-to-warehouse integrations, custom dashboards, ad-hoc reporting tooling, and the data quality layer.
  5. Payroll & Compliance Reporting Automation: Build the integration and automation layer that supports payroll and compliance work. This role builds clean data flows, automated reconciliation, audit-trail capture, and statutory reporting tooling so those teams can run their processes efficiently and accurately.
  6. Onboarding & Offboarding Systems: Build the systems and automation layer for new joiner provisioning, exits, and access management — system access workflows, automated checklists, status tracking, document triggers, and IT integrations. Programme management of onboarding sits with the People Business Partners; this role provides the engineering scaffolding underneath.
  7. Internal Tooling & Self-Service: Build internal tools that let the People team, managers, and employees self-serve where it makes sense — request forms, status lookups, manager dashboards, employee data portals. Identify where a small internal tool would remove a recurring queue of manual requests and ship the tool.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of software engineering or systems engineering experience, ideally in scaling tech or fintech environments
  • Strong scripting and programming skills — Python, JavaScript / Node, or comparable
  • Hands-on experience integrating SaaS systems via REST APIs, webhooks, and OAuth
  • Comfort with SQL and working with data — pipelines, transformations, and analytics-adjacent engineering
  • Track record of shipping automations and internal tooling that eliminated meaningful manual work
  • Ability to operate independently and ship end-to-end without heavy engineering oversight
  • Comfort partnering with non-technical stakeholders (People, Finance, Legal) to translate operational needs into engineering solutions
  • High discretion and sound judgment with sensitive information
  • Excellent written communication, including the ability to document systems, decisions, and tradeoffs

Nice to have

  • Prior experience building tooling for People, HR, or Finance teams
  • Familiarity with one or more People SaaS platforms (BambooHR, HiBob, Workday, 15Five, Deel)
  • Experience with workflow automation platforms (Slack workflows, Zapier, Make) as part of a broader engineering toolkit
  • Exposure to data warehousing and BI tooling (Looker, Mode, dbt, BigQuery / Snowflake)
  • Experience working in or embedded with a non-engineering function (People, Finance, Legal, Ops)
