Role Overview

The Financial Controller will play a critical role in developing the financial operation. The role presents a great opportunity to grow the finance function in a rapidly growing business; extending the functions where necessary including integrating acquisitions and developing new business plans for new license applications. The role’s primary focus is to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data, and providing strategic financial guidance to the executive team. This position requires a deep understanding of financial management within the payments industry, a strong analytical mindset, and the ability to lead a finance team effectively. Opportunity exists for role growth to become Head of Finance/CFO.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting:

  • Prepare and present accurate financial statements, reports, and analyses in compliance with local regulations and international accounting standards.
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes, ensuring timely submission to management and stakeholders.
  • Monitor key financial metrics, identifying trends, and providing insights to support decision-making.

Budgeting & Forecasting:

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, working closely with department heads to develop comprehensive financial plans.
  • Prepare forecasts and financial projections to guide strategic planning and resource allocation.
  • Analyze variances between actual and budgeted figures, providing explanations and recommendations for corrective actions.

Cash Flow Management:

  • Monitor cash flow to ensure sufficient liquidity for operational needs and strategic investments.
  • Manage relationships with banks and financial institutions to optimize funding arrangements and minimize costs.
  • Implement and maintain effective cash management strategies and controls.

Internal Controls & Compliance:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain robust internal control systems to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular financial audits and reviews to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
  • Liaise with external auditors during annual audits and ensure timely resolution of audit findings.

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team (2), fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to enhance the team’s skills and knowledge.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and manage team dynamics to ensure optimal productivity.

Strategic Financial Planning:

  • Collaborate with the executive team to develop and implement long-term financial strategies that align with the company’s goals.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to support business growth, cost management, and profitability enhancement.
  • Evaluate financial risks and opportunities, advising on potential impacts and mitigation strategies.

Requirements

Educational Qualifications:

  • Chartered Accountant (CA(SA)) or equivalent professional qualification with relevant experience.

 Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a financial management role, preferably within the payments industry or a related sector.
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices in financial management.
  • Proven experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience with SQL for data extraction and analysis, or a strong eagerness to rapidly upskill in SQL to support data-driven decision-making.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with a track record of developing high-performing teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in financial software and tools (e.g., ERP systems, Excel).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly and concisely.
