Electrical System Safety Engineer - eVTOL Development

Aichi, Japan

Outline of the Job

We are seeking a highly skilled Electrical System Safety Engineer to support the development and certification of next-generation eVTOL aircraft. The ideal candidate combines strong system-level safety assessment capabilities with deep technical understanding of electrical components, architectures, and failure behaviors. This role focuses specifically on HV/LV power generation, distribution, and high-voltage charging systems, ensuring they meet stringent aerospace safety requirements through rigorous analysis, design influence, and supplier coordination.

Job Duties

System Safety & Certification

  • Lead and execute safety assessments in accordance with ARP-4761, including FHA, PSSA, SSA, and CMA.
  • Develop and maintain safety documentation supporting compliance with FAA/EASA/JCAB regulations and applicable aerospace standards.
  • Conduct system- and component-level FMEA/FMECA for electrical power generation, distribution, and charging systems.
  • Derive, validate, and trace safety requirements into system and component specifications.

Design & Engineering Integration

  • Provide safety-driven design guidance to Electric Power Generation, Distribution, and Charging engineering teams, ensuring safe architecture decisions for HVDC/LVDC systems, switching/protection elements, converters, and charge interfaces.
  • Evaluate design concepts for isolation, redundancy, current/voltage protection, monitoring, and fault containment as they relate to electrical safety.
  • Support validation of safe fault-handling behaviors, including detection thresholds, fault-response timing, and system reconfiguration strategies.

Flight Deck Alerting & CAS Messaging

  • Assess and define required Flight Deck alerting (CAS messages) related to electrical generation, distribution, and charging failures or abnormal conditions.
  • Ensure alerts are aligned with system safety analyses, crew workload considerations, and operational hazard mitigations.
  • Collaborate with human factors and flight operations teams to refine alert priority, wording, and logic.

Supplier Coordination

  • Coordinate safety-related documentation and technical data with suppliers of electrical power components, including contactors, relays, converters, harnesses, connectors, and protection devices.
  • Review supplier safety analyses, reliability data, qualification evidence, and component fault-response documentation.
  • Ensure supplier components meet aircraft-level safety requirements and integrate correctly into overall safety assessments.

Component & Failure Mode Expertise

  • Analyze and model failure modes for:
    • Contactors / relays (welded contacts, bounce, coil burnout, dropout behavior)
    • Converters / rectifiers (semiconductor failures, over-temperature, DC link faults)
    • Wiring & harnesses (chafing, arcing, insulation breakdown)
    • Connectors (thermal runaway from resistive connections, intermittent opens, misalignment)
  • Support root-cause investigations and reliability growth activities for electrical components.

Battery & Energy Storage (Preferred)

  • Support safety assessments involving battery packs, modules, cells, and BMS fault responses.
  • Contribute to thermal runaway risk mitigation and DO-311A or equivalent compliance efforts.

Job Highlights

This position offers the opportunity to be directly involved in the development of groundbreaking "flying cars." Through innovative technology and battery testing, you will contribute to shaping the safety and reliability of future modes of transportation. It's a highly rewarding job where you collaborate with the team to solve challenges and directly contribute to the success of the product.
