Mass Property Engineer

Aichi, Japan

Position Summary:

As a Mass Properties Engineer, you will be responsible for the weight and balance management of our next-generation eVTOL aircraft. You will track, calculate, and optimize the mass properties (mass, CG, and moments of inertia) throughout the entire product lifecycle—from conceptual design to flight testing and certification. Your work is critical to ensuring the aircraft meets performance targets, safety requirements, and JCAB/FAA certification standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Weight & Balance Management: Establish and maintain the aircraft’s mass properties database using PLM software and specialized weight management tools.
  • Estimation & Analysis: Perform detailed weight estimations for primary structures, propulsion systems (batteries/motors), and avionics during the design phase.
  • CG Control: Monitor Center of Gravity (CG) envelopes and provide design recommendations to engineering teams to ensure the aircraft remains within controllable limits.
  • Inertia Calculations: Calculate and analyze Moments of Inertia (MOI) and Products of Inertia (POI) for flight dynamics modeling and control law development.
  • Reporting: Generate Mass Properties Reports (MPR) for design reviews and regulatory compliance (e.g., SAWE RP8).
  • Verification: Lead physical weighing activities of components, sub-assemblies, and the fully integrated aircraft to validate digital models.
  • Optimization: Identify weight reduction opportunities and lead "weight sweeps" to improve the aircraft’s payload capacity and range.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in mass properties engineering within the aerospace industry.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (CATIA V5, NX, or SolidWorks, etc...) to extract mass data.
  • Experience with weight management software.
  • Strong understanding of SAWE Recommended Practices.
  • Proficiency in Excel/VBA, Python, or MATLAB for data analysis and automation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in eVTOL sector
  • Experience with composite structures and high-voltage battery systems mass characteristics.
  • Knowledge of certification processes.
  • Experience in flight test support and actual aircraft weighing operations.

What We Offer:

  • Strong communication skills to interact with design owners, systems engineers, manufacturing, and program management.
  • High rigor, attention to detail, and ownership of integration issues.
  • Ability to synthesize complex technical topics concisely.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environments with evolving requirements.
