Job Summary:
The Transportation Manager is responsible for overseeing dock door operations supporting both freight and eCommerce fulfillment in a 3PL environment. This role manages carrier performance, ensures efficient inbound and outbound transportation flow, and partners closely with warehouse, fulfillment, and operations teams to drive continuous improvement in service, cost, and execution. The Transportation Manager plays a critical role in maintaining carrier KPIs and merchant satisfaction, optimizing dock utilization, and supporting high-volume, time-sensitive operations.
What you’ll do:
Dock Door & Transportation Operations
- Manage daily dock door operations and capacity planning for eCommerce logistics.
- Ensure efficient scheduling, utilization, and throughput of dock doors to support operational demand.
- Coordinate with warehouse and fulfillment teams to align labor, dock availability, and transportation schedules.
- Training operations teams through Transportation SOPs, performance management and KPI tracking
- Inbound capacity planning and management through scheduling software to ensure priorities and exceptions are aligned with merchant expectations
Freight
- Monitor freight process flow, quoting, delays, and service failures.
- Freight financial reconciliation and invoice review for booked freight loads
- Freight TMS management and RFP for new services and solutions including go to market capabilities partnering with sales team to provide process scope to merchants
- Partner with Customer success team to provide solutions and drive merchant satisfaction
- Support Bonded inbound and freight transfers as needed
Continuous Improvement & Cross-functional Partnerships
- Identify opportunities to improve transportation efficiency, reduce dwell time, and lower costs.
- Analyze transportation and dock performance data to identify trends and root causes.
- Lead or support process improvement initiatives related to dock operations, scheduling, and carrier performance.
- Partner with operations, fulfillment, and planning teams to support daily execution.
- Collaborate on process improvements to improve dock efficiency, speed to ship, and customer service.
- Act as the transportation subject-matter expert for dock door and carrier-related issues.
Carrier Management & Performance
- Manage day to day operating relationships with carriers, brokers, and transportation partners.
- Track, analyze, and drive KPIs including on-time performance, dwell time, cost, and service quality for network dock door operations.
- Conduct regular carrier scorecard reviews and performance meetings.
- Drive corrective actions and continuous improvement plans with underperforming
What you’ll need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3–5+ years of transportation or logistics management experience.
- Experience managing dock door operations in a distribution, freight, or eCommerce environment.
- Strong knowledge of carrier management and transportation KPIs.
- Proven ability to partner cross-functionally and influence operational teams.
- Strong analytical skills with experience using transportation or warehouse management systems (TMS/WMS).
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred:
- Experience supporting high-volume eCommerce fulfillment operations.
- Experience managing both parcel and LTL/FTL transportation.
- Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience.
- Experience operating in a fast-paced, multi-shift environment.
