BESS Business Development Manager (m/w/d)

Berlin, Germany

The Second Foundation Group is an international energy trading company with around 400 employees based in Prague (Czech Republic), Zug (Switzerland), Mainz and Berlin (Germany), Charlotte (USA), and Tokyo (Japan). We specialize in the physical trading of electricity across 21 markets in Europe, North America, and Asia.

We focus on integrating and optimally marketing renewable energies and battery storage within the electricity market. Since 2023, the Second Foundation Group has been investing in its assets, particularly battery storage systems. With a portfolio of 15 battery storage projects with a capacity of over 500 MW, our next goal is to establish ourselves as a leading owner and operator of battery storage systems in Germany. Innovative and efficient storage solutions pave the way for deeper integration of renewable energy sources.

To achieve this task, our employees are at the heart of everything we do. The Second Foundation Group employs some of the brightest minds from various disciplines, such as computer science, mathematics, and economics, to solve seemingly unsolvable problems in the energy markets. We empower people to grow, explore new ideas, and thrive as part of a team that values innovation and mutual support. With room to think freely and act independently, you'll work on impactful projects, far from the constraints of traditional corporate setups.

We are seeking a highly organized and strategic BESS Business Development Manager to grow, own and oversee our battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio. You will oversee projects across their entire lifecycle - from early development through construction, handover, and into operations. Acting as the single point of accountability for the BESS portfolio, you will ensure seamless coordination between developers, construction teams, O&M, procurement, and external stakeholders.

What would you work on?

  • Build and manage relationships with BESS project developers.
  • Grow our BESS project pipeline through development agreements and M&A.
  • Act as the owner of all BESS projects from early-stage development to O&M handover.
  • Guide external developers on preferred locations, technical layouts, compliance, and more.
  • Monitor developer performance, review the progress - especially Ready-to-Build (RTB) status - and provide feedback.
  • Track and report on the status of each project during development and construction, ensuring alignment with company objectives.
  • Ensure smooth handover of projects from development to construction at RTB stage, avoiding gaps or misalignments.
  • Oversee procurement schedules, particularly for long lead-time items, ensuring project delivery risks and delays are minimized.
  • Act as a senior interface with landowners, local authorities, stakeholders, and grid operators from late development through construction and operations.
  • Provide portfolio-level reporting to senior management, highlighting risks, milestones, and progress.
  • Serve as the central point of truth for the entire BESS portfolio, ensuring continuity across teams.

What makes you a great candidate?

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, Geography, Project Management, or a related field.
  • 5-10 years experience in renewable energy or infrastructure project development / project management, with a strong focus on battery storage, solar, or grid-scale energy assets.
  • Proven ability to manage complex, multi-stakeholder projects from development through construction.
  • Strong knowledge of grid connection processes, permitting, and local stakeholder engagement.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills; able to track multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Fluency in German and English.

What do we offer?

  • Competitive remuneration package with attractive variable component.
  • Working with absolute experts in algorithmic trading.
  • Flexible working hours and home office options.
  • High-end work equipment (devices optionally from Apple, Samsung, Lenovo).
  • Short decision-making paths and rapid development opportunities.
  • Individual training opportunities.
