System Engineer BESS/PCS (German speaker)
The Second Foundation Group is an international energy trading company with around 350 employees based in Prague (Czech Republic), Zug (Switzerland), Mainz and Berlin (Germany), Charlotte (USA), and Tokyo (Japan). We specialize in the physical trading of electricity across 21 markets in Europe, North America, and Asia.
We focus on integrating and optimally marketing renewable energies and battery storage within the electricity market. Since 2023, the Second Foundation Group has been investing in its assets, particularly battery storage systems. With a portfolio of 15 battery storage projects with a capacity of over 500 MW, our next goal is to establish ourselves as a leading owner and operator of battery storage systems in Germany. Innovative and efficient storage solutions pave the way for deeper integration of renewable energy sources.

As a System Engineer Battery Storage, you will play a key role in the development of Second Foundation Group’s battery storage portfolio. You will work closely with our internal teams as well as with project developers, suppliers, and service providers to create innovative solutions and drive forward sustainable battery storage projects.
What would you work on?
- Take full technical ownership of the storage system design and engineering.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to develop scalable, innovative battery storage solutions.
- Lead the basic and detailed design of battery storage systems, including battery containers, inverters, transformers, medium-voltage switchgear, auxiliary stations, transfer stations, and EMS.
- Prepare detailed specifications for all electrical components and system designs for storage systems with >10 MW grid connection.
- Ensure all design work complies with grid operator requirements (TAB, VDE-AR-N 4110 and 4120).
- Coordinate certification processes in line with VDE-AR-N 4110 and 4120 requirements in collaboration with certification bodies.
- Define safety concepts and protection components to ensure smooth and secure plant operation.
- Review design documents from internal engineering teams and external planning offices.
- Create and manage standardized technical documentation.
- Draft white papers on key project development topics (e.g. fire protection, noise, wastewater, etc.).
- Analyze technical workflows and develop planning and operations guidelines for battery storage systems.
- Support the planning and oversight of commissioning activities, including coordination and programming of the Energy Management System (EMS).
- Act as the main technical point of contact for all BESS component suppliers
- Create CAD-based layouts and schematics for battery storage systems.
What makes you a great candidate?
- Completed degree in engineering (e.g. electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, renewable energy) or a comparable qualification.
- Several years of experience in the technical design and specification of battery storage systems.
- A strong interest in renewable energy and battery storage technologies.
- High level of curiosity and willingness to learn, with the ability to quickly adapt to new areas of responsibility.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, paired with assertiveness and confidence.
- Strong analytical and conceptual thinking, combined with a structured, independent, and detail-oriented work approach.
- High level of reliability, initiative, and personal drive.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
- Advanced skills in using AutoCAD and/or Inventor..
- Willingness to travel within Germany and occasionally within the EMEA region
- Fluent German and English skills, both spoken and written, suitable for professional negotiations.
- A valid Class B driving license.
- A people-first attitude and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
