System Engineer Substations/High Voltage (German speaker)
The Second Foundation Group is an international energy trading company with around 350 employees based in Prague (Czech Republic), Zug (Switzerland), Mainz and Berlin (Germany), Charlotte (USA), and Tokyo (Japan). We specialize in the physical trading of electricity across 21 markets in Europe, North America, and Asia.
We focus on integrating and optimally marketing renewable energies and battery storage within the electricity market. Since 2023, the Second Foundation Group has been investing in its assets, particularly battery storage systems. With a portfolio of 15 battery storage projects with a capacity of over 500 MW, our next goal is to establish ourselves as a leading owner and operator of battery storage systems in Germany. As a System Engineer Grid Integration (MV/HV), you will play a key role in the execution and commissioning of Second Foundation Group’s growing battery storage portfolio. You’ll collaborate closely with our internal teams as well as with project developers, suppliers, and service partners to shape innovative solutions and advance impactful, sustainable energy projects.
You will take technical ownership of the standardized basic and detailed design of substations ranging from 110 kV to 380 kV, as well as the connection of battery storage systems to medium-voltage (MV) grids.
What would you work on?
- You will commission and evaluate grid connection studies in accordance with the requirements of the grid operator and applicable regulations.
- You will support the preparation of grid applications, connection concepts, and technical specifications for grid integration.
- You will build and maintain strong relationships with public and private grid operators.
- You will coordinate and communicate with grid operators, regulatory authorities, and other relevant stakeholders throughout grid connection and permitting processes.
- You will oversee and coordinate all grid connection works, including commissioning and acceptance testing.
- You will document all grid connection activities and ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
- You will collaborate closely with internal technical teams and external partners to ensure successful grid integration.
- You will act as a technical point of contact for the BESS Execution Team, as well as for EPC partners and component suppliers in the following areas:
- Medium-voltage (10–30 kV) and high-voltage (110–380 kV)
- Grid connection processes and coordination with grid operators
- Protection and control systems (e.g. protection relays, grid protection concepts)
- You have in-depth knowledge of relevant standards such as VDE 0101, VDE-AR-N 4110, IEC 61850, and DIN VDE 0105.
- You are able to switch MV/HV equipment on construction sites when needed.
- You perform grid calculations and short-circuit analyses.
- You build and simulate grid models using suitable software tools.
What makes you a great candidate?
- A completed degree in electrical engineering, energy systems engineering, or a comparable qualification.
- Professional experience in grid connection, grid integration, or a related field is a plus
- Experience in working with grid operators and public authorities.
- Strong skills in grid calculation software (e.g. PowerFactory, PSS®SINCAL) are an advantage.
- A solid interest in renewable energy and battery storage technologies.
- High willingness to learn and the ability to quickly familiarize yourself with new areas of responsibility.
- Excellent communication and team skills, combined with confidence and assertiveness.
- Strong analytical and conceptual thinking, paired with a structured, independent, and detail-oriented working style.
- A high degree of reliability, initiative, and commitment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
- In-depth knowledge of grid connection regulations, technologies, and standards, especially VDE-AR-N 4110 and VDE-AR-N 4120.
- Willingness to travel within Germany and occasionally within the EMEA region.
- Fluent German and English, both spoken and written, suitable for business and negotiations.
- A valid Class B driver’s license.
- A people-focused mindset and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
