We’re building a world-class team to support our next phase of growth, and we’re looking for
an experienced, hands-on Head of People who can spearhead the function, inspire the team,
and deliver on the critical initiatives that will make SciLeads an outstanding place to work.
About the Role:
As Head of People, you’ll take full ownership of the People function, leading a team of three
and delivering on both strategic initiatives and day-to-day HR operations. This isn’t just about
creating a great place to work, it’s about building a high-performing culture that actively
drives business growth.
You’ll be a critical partner to the executive team, aligning people strategy with commercial
outcomes and using people data to influence decision-making. You’ll shape a culture that is
purpose-driven, inclusive, and laser-focused on performance where people are both highly
engaged and empowered to deliver exceptional results.
You will also be responsible for designing and launching “people products” (from performance
frameworks to reward and recognition mechanisms) that scale with us, support retention of
top talent, and build a supportive but challenging culture of accountability and excellence.
This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, scale-up environment and
enjoys rolling up their sleeves while influencing at the leadership level.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development
- Manage, coach, and develop a high performing People team to deliver on agreed objectives
- Contribute to the leadership team by bringing people insight and challenge to strategic conversations
Key Initiatives
- Define and deliver a scalable People Strategy that supports the full employee lifecycle from attraction, recruitment, development, retention and off-boarding
- Work in partnership with senior members of the business to design and implement a performance management framework that fits our scale and culture
- Create and launch a high-impact learning and development programme for managers and high-potential talent to enhance our culture of continuous improvement
- Conduct a full benefits review and direct improvements that support retention and engagement
- Define and track key people metrics such as eNPS to inform decision-making and track progress
Ongoing Responsibilities
- Drive continuous improvement across each stage of the employee lifecycle, ensuring processes remain efficient, engaging and aligned to the evolving needs of the business and its people
- Oversee compliance with employment laws in the UK, NI, and Canada — including working closely with external advisors, especially across Canadian provinces, overseeing engagements with Employer of Record (EOR) providers, and managing compliance for remote contractors
- Supervise the preparation of UK and Canadian payroll input sheets, ensuring accuracy and identifying opportunities to delegate or automate
- Own and continuously enhance our HRIS (HiBob) to drive automation, streamline workflows, and improve documentation, reporting, and people data across all HR processes
- Champion culture and engagement across a fully remote team
- Develop policies and people processes that scale with the business
Essential Skills and Experience:
- 5+ years in progressive People/HR roles which includes experience managing and developing a team
- Delivery of strategic people initiatives to support high growth
- Evidence of successful execution of plans including initiatives across strategic talent and recruitment and workforce planning initiatives, performance, learning and development, engagement, well-being, compensation and benefits, organizational design and development, and strategic resource planning
- Proven ability to operate at pace in a scale-up or fast-growing environment
- Strong influencing skills — you’re comfortable challenging and supporting senior members of the business
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and known for your follow-through — you thrive in the detail and strive for clarity and completion in everything you do
- Fluency in utilising technology including AI tools, collaboration systems (Slack, Notion etc) and experienced in HRIS systems (ideally HiBob)
- A systems thinker experienced in developing and overseeing compliance processes,and payroll workflows
- Experience supporting globally distributed teams with sensitivity to different working styles and cultural norms
- Skilled in using data and systems to improve processes, efficiency and decision-making
- Based in the UK with the right to work
- An appropriate knowledge of employment legislation and an understanding in UK and NI employment legislation
