About The Quality Engineering Chapter

While you’ll be embedded in the Customer Management squad, you will be a key member of our strong and supportive Quality Engineering chapter. We are a close-knit community of engineers who specialise in quality, acting as a force multiplier for the entire engineering organisation. We have our own ceremonies, one of which is our weekly Quality Roundtable—a space for healthy debate where we share events of the week, exchange useful news, and encourage everyone to bring a curious mind and good questions. We also align quarterly on our strategic quality initiatives, run bi-weekly workshops, and regularly pair to help each other achieve our shared objectives. We do quarterly socials together and support each other regardless of which tribe or squad you're in, because our purpose is to build confidence into the product development lifecycle for everyone.

About the Role

This is a unique opportunity to join one of our highest-priority business areas—the Home Tribe—and make a significant impact from day one. You will be the dedicated Quality Engineer for Customer Management, a cross-functional, product-led squad, a critical team responsible for the systems that serve our large and growing customer base.

Your mission is to help us fill a crucial gap, bringing your growing expertise to a squad that is central to our success. You won't be on your own; this role comes with a dedicated mentor—a Senior Quality Engineer II in the tribe—who will be there to support your growth, guide your technical decisions, and help you develop into a future quality leader at Policy Expert.

You will be a key engineering partner and a pragmatic toolsmith, helping your squad build confidence by enhancing the quality and resilience of our core customer-facing systems.

Our Tech Stack

We rely heavily on the following tools and technologies:

  • Java, Kotlin, and Groovy to write our application and test code
  • Dynamo / Postgres / MySQL / Aurora / S3 for most persistent data storage
  • SNS/SQS for our event-driven architecture
  • Fargate and Docker to schedule and run our services
  • AWS for most of our infrastructure, including Canaries for synthetic monitoring
  • React and TypeScript for our client-facing apps, with Cypress, Playwright, and Storybook for testing and development
  • NodeJS for serverless / middleware applications
  • GraphQL / REST for client APIs, with PACT for contract testing
  • GitHub Actions for our CI/CD

Your day to day:

  • Design for Quality: Contribute to early-stage system specifications and designs, ensuring that quality attributes like testability, observability, and resilience are baked in from the start.
  • Develop Your Specialism: Build deep expertise in our core technologies (Java/Kotlin, React/NodeJS, AWS), becoming a trusted point of contact for quality within your squad.
  • Contribute to and Implement Testing Strategies: Work with your squad and mentor to define and implement comprehensive testing strategies, grounded in modern practices like TDD, ATDD, and automation. As the squad's testing specialist, you will apply your hands-on expertise in areas like exploratory and integration testing, while coaching and pairing with other engineers to elevate the team's overall testing practices.
  • Build and Learn: Develop scripts, tools, and test harnesses to automate processes and solve engineering challenges for the team, while continuously exploring new technologies that can enhance our confidence in releases.
  • Enhance Our Systems: Actively contribute to improving our monitoring and observability, helping the team identify and resolve issues before they impact our customers.
  • Contribute to Incident Response: Be an active participant in the incident management process. You will contribute to the investigation, resolution, and post-incident analysis, helping the team learn and improve.
  • Support Your Team: Actively collaborate with your squad through pairing, code reviews, and knowledge sharing, helping to uphold and enforce our high standards for engineering.
  • Learn and Grow: Work closely with your mentor to identify gaps in your knowledge, create a personal development plan, and continuously grow your skills.

Who are you?

  • You are a quality-focused professional—perhaps from a QA or Software Testing background—with a passion and experience in modern engineering practices and a desire to grow into a senior QE role.
  • You are a pragmatic toolsmith at heart; you enjoy building scripts and learning new tools to solve challenging problems.
  • You are building deep expertise in specific technologies (e.g., Java, NodeJS, or AWS) and are keen to become a subject matter expert.
  • You have a good understanding of modern engineering practices, including ATDD, TDD, CI/CD, and the value of test automation as a design tool.
  • You are a strong collaborator who enjoys working in a team, sharing knowledge, and learning from others.
  • You are proactive and curious, always looking for opportunities to improve systems, processes, and your own skills.

Interview Process

  1. Introductory Call (30 mins): A chat with our Talent Partner to get to know each other and discuss your career aspirations and our vision for quality.
  2. Technical Deep Dive (60 mins): A conversation with some of our engineering leaders to explore your technical literacy and experience in more depth.
